Emotional surrender… returning home

Ah, the long, hot, lazy days of summer…… This time of year makes me squirrelly to be outside as much as possible… whether it’s in my garden, out by the marsh, or out on our screen porch. Mind you, most weeks at the studio are insanely wild (and I love every minute of them… my head is literally spinning with the juicy goodness of it all… designing new fashion goodies for our holiday catalog… planning our next research trip… being inspired at every turn… but I digress!!). While I absolutely live for these moments (and think I would go crazy without the much-needed adrenaline rush)… it’s the evenings and weekends spent at home that I seem to cherish the most. (Don’t we all??) After a full day of rollicking in the marsh… or playing (read: weeding) out in the garden… it’s great to gather out on the porch and sip ice cold lemonade (for the boys) or mojitos (for John and me). We have a fantastic screen porch enclosed on top of a huge stone slab facing the marsh… and this exquisite bamboo and rattan table set is the quintessential go-to item out there!! (I’ll admit – we have surrendered… completely.) The boys absolutely love it as their game table during the afternoon (bonus that they’re in the shade while the sun’s rays are at their hottest). Then at night we clear it off and let them have their own “big kids” table during dinner. Summer entertaining is of course on my radar as well… and this charming set is simply smashing when we have guests! I’ve been known to push the table off to the side, toss a pretty throw over it, and create a lovely impromptu buffet… and then sprinkle the chairs here and there for extra seating. Or, when a favorite auntie offers to look after the boys (thanks, Robyn!!) John and I will enjoy an intimate evening for two, dining under the stars… (Function + Fantasy… Who knew?!) Mind you, if dining al fresco isn’t your gig, this table and chair set is just as sweet perched in a breakfast nook… or as a lovely addition to an indoor sun porch for reading, playing games, and more! So, you know me…… I’d love to hear… Are you as smitten with this set as I am?!?!

On my radar… creating a vignette!

I’ve blogged a little bit about this before… but for those of you who are new to our site, we’ve been completely transforming many rooms in our home with bold colors… amazing textures… succulent wallpaper… yum! So, this corner of our dining room needed a lift… The dark mocha wall color is a magnificent starting point… rich and decadent. Nowadays you can bring just about anything to your local hardware store – a beloved pillow, a favorite t-shirt, even a piece of silk ribbon – and have them whip up the custom color of your dreams… As a side note, I do tend to like satin finish on the walls with high gloss “lacquer” finish (simple latex will do) for the trim. (Helps the smudges of four little boys disappear with little effort… but who’s looking, right??) Next we perched a fabulous Italian pine buffet beneath our carved mahogany chinoiserie mirror, kissed in metallic gold… then framed it with six stunning resin antler mounts. (Check out our highland retreat collection if you’re intrigued by this huntress look!) Two modern, ebony lamps add a much needed “pop” of color with their vibrant, scarlet shades. With the backdrop complete… I started loading up the top of the buffet with all sorts of little treasures. Essentially any item is fair game when I’m building a vignette… such as found objects from around our property… a vintage clock I’ve had for years… a gorgeous resin stag (he isn’t old, but his finish was so exquisite, I couldn’t resist). Even a pewter teacup finds new life as a charming votive holder. Any little goodies that I’m feeling particularly passionate about at the moment usually make their way in. And I’m never hesitant to pull things out and rearrange them as I grow tired of them, or move them about to other rooms in my home to keep them fresh and interesting. It’s all about the highs and lows of different layers, textures, and finishes. Just follow your gut, don’t be intimidated – and make it your own!!!

Covetable centerpieces

One of my favorite passions (as you may know) is creating beautiful and interesting centerpieces - no matter what the occasion. (No, it’s not just for guests!) Mind you, I’m not talking break-the-bank extravagance by any means… and I most certainly am not changing it up every night… good Lord, who has the time?!? But I cannot count the number of times people have asked me, where do you even begin?? My philosophy is, your home is your sanctuary… so everything about it should reflect your personality. Don’t feel beholden to other people’s expectations. Sure, there may be things about your home that you want to change and maybe can’t afford today… all the little nuances that you’re striving to get to… that’s okay! It’s all about taking those first little nibbles… Starting small and growing from there… Setting a fanciful tablescape is just one small way to pamper you and your family… If you take a few extra minutes, you really can pull it all together and make it feel truly special!

* More is definitely more!
As in life, fashion… just about anything really… layers are what make it all soooo good. Think treasures that’ll make your eye linger… highs and lows… unique textures to shake it up, from scraps of burlap to silk scarves… vintage pieces mixed with the new… eclectic and luscious!!

* Think of your table… as an outfit. Start with a great pair of jeans (in our case, a pine table) – and build up from there! A fabulous throw becomes an impromptu table runner… velvet curtains make a terrific tablecloth… I’ve even draped yards of gorgeous fabric over my table in a pinch (yes, raw edges and all!). Truly, no one is looking! (And if they are, who knows… maybe they’ll be inspired to “let go” too??)

* Start with an anchor piece. This could be a gorgeous tray or oversized urn… a stunning glass vessel overflowing with wildflowers… a ceramic figurine… a fabulous mirror… anything that is near and dear to your heart.

* Bring the outdoors in! By this I mean bird nests, interesting stones, flowering branches, deer sheds (antlers)… anything cool and rustic that tickles your fancy!

* Mix in a few pieces of vintage silver for a touch of sparkle… it could be a smashing tray, pieces of flatware tied with ribbon, a pewter teacup with a candle plunked into it, a salt & pepper set.

* Don’t forget the candlelight! I love sprinkling little votives randomly around my centerpieces… Sometimes I’ll mix it up and put a dozen of them in a row down the center of my table. Other times I’ll put one at each place setting. Oh, and don’t forget your window ledges, kitchen counter, side buffet… your porch railing! I just find flickering candlelight to be so romantic…

* p.s. Enjoy an evening picnic
now & again… pretty dishes, centerpieces, and all! Especially if you have a porch or a deck… now is the time to take advantage! Being from Wisconsin, I know that the cold, chilly months of winter are practically lurking around the corner… (Ack, can’t go there yet!!!! I need a few sticky, 90 degree days in there first!!) Mind you, I’m all for using paper plates in a pinch – but food truly does taste better when it’s served on pretty things – wouldn’t you agree?? And really, if you’ve got a dishwasher – or a helpful mate – what’s the difference? The little bit of extra clean-up time is well worth the added whimsy…

A penchant for altars!

I am a huge believer in displaying all of my little objets d’art in the form of “altars” – essentially any surface (foyer table, side console, bookshelves, bathroom vanity, boudoir dresser) is ripe for showing off all your cherished goodies. I’ve always done this, ever since I was little. I think my French grandmother, Lucy, really inspired me here… It all goes back to tantalizing LAYERS. And really, why have pieces of antique china, old love letters, postcards, perfume bottles, garden statuary, etc, tucked away in a box or cupboard somewhere?? Sure, they won’t collect any dust there… But if they’re not out and about, how can you truly enjoy them, tell stories about them… delight in the added charm they can bring to your space?? My altars aren’t themed, really (although I’m sure John would be all over a Michael Jordan shrine if I allowed one!!!). They’re more about creating a mood, or a feeling… some with more huntress elements… some are more Asian inspired… but mostly they’re all very different and eclectic… A London Wall for my tables, if you will. I especially love including pieces of wall art in my altars. They add yet another wonderful layer… some with vintage flair, others more mod or kitschy… some with frames, some without… I must admit I have a bit of a weakness here… nary a surface is left untouched in our home! My altars are ever-changing, and that’s what I love about them… I hope you’ll be inspired to create an altar of your own!!

p.s. If you have an open side table or buffet, a great tip for covering up any unsightly electrical cords below is to place a stack of books or magazines in front of them! In the video you’ll see I’ve even used a piece of wall art – casually perched on the floor, leaning up against the wall. (You could also use a set of rattan baskets or nesting boxes here… with the added bonus of extra storage tucked inside!)

More noshing… can’t get enough!

I’m so delighted you’ve been asking about some of our tried & true recipes… These goodies were featured on our old website, but never made it into the new blog. So… here you go!!! I’d love it you’d share any tidbits, if you’ve tried any variations, etc. I love experimenting in the kitchen… a little dash of this, a pinch of that…… All of the chatter is wonderfully inspiring, so please keep your comments rolling in… We truly are listening!! xoxo, Tracy

SWEDISH PANCAKES

Every weekend we have a favorite breakfast in our house… Swedish pancakes! I have loved them since childhood, when my mother made them on the weekends. They have a texture unlike regular pancakes. They are smooth and sweet, even though there is very little sugar in the batter. I can eat them plain, and I don’t even throw out the leftovers. I keep them in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator and munch on them cold.

I will be honest and tell you that, although I am nearly an expert on these fine delights… I almost always screw up cooking my first two pancakes!! I am happy to munch on those while cooking the others. Maybe it’s my own devious way to get at them as quickly as possible?? I think I get so eager to taste them that I invariably try to flip them too fast, hence the screw up. So… be patient and you will get the hang of these!

As for the toppings… classic Swedish pancakes are served with lingonberries. You can buy this jam at most any grocery store. It’s a nice tart yet sweet topping. I like to lay out my pancake, drizzle it with melted sweet (unsalted) butter. Then I roll and top with lingonberries. After a few of these, I have some with maple syrup and just dip them into butter. (Not for the feint of heart… I am, however, of good Wisconsin stock.) My kids like theirs with a can of RediWhip (yes, you read that right!). We make faces with the RediWhip on the pancakes, and then drizzle them with maple or chocolate syrup. I love mine with a nice strong cup of earl grey tea.

Below is my mom’s delicious recipe if you’d like to give them a try!

1-1/4 cups flour
1-1/2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
3 large eggs
2-1/2 cups milk
2 Tbsp melted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla

Mix the flour, sugar, and salt together along with 1 cup of the milk and the eggs. Once you have a nice smooth batter, add in the additional 1-1/2 cups milk, the butter, and the vanilla. I use an 8″ Teflon coated sauté pan… this works extremely well. I also have a crepe pan which is wonderful, but you don’t need to get one if this isn’t going to be a regular thing for you. I happen to be obsessed with these pancakes!

Make sure your pan is hot (medium heat). Put a bit of butter in the pan. I usually wipe most of it out. (If you keep too much butter, your pancake edges will get all bubbly. I tend to dislike this, but lots of restaurants make them that way.) Pour in 1/4 cup or so of the batter (depends on your pan size) – sometimes you will add more. The goal is to cover the bottom of the pan, but you want a very thin pancake. Make sure when you pour, you then rotate it around the bottom of the pan. The pancakes are ready to flip when the edges are brown; about a minute or so. A rubber spatula can work better than a standard metal one. Cook again for just under a minute on the flip side. I don’t like mine too dark… you need to find your personal preference here. As you finish them, put them on a plate with a towel on top as you add to the stack… keeps them very happy and warm.

If there are any left to take to the table, you have far more willpower than I do!!

CALL YOUR CARDIOLOGIST FIRST…
CORN PUDDING

You may cringe a bit at the butter, but I am a Wisconsin girl… and we do butter here! I love this luscious corn pudding baked in an old cast iron pan… I use one that my grandmother passed on to me. If you have one, by all means, pull it out… It not only looks good in one, but it adds a little extra crispiness to the edges. As far as the size of the pan you bake it in, this depends on your taste. I like my pudding a bit thicker, so I use a cast iron pan that is about 8″ in diameter. Use this as your guideline. This will take you all of 5 minutes to make… perfect with ribs, a big plate of summer tomatoes, and a nice arugula salad. I adore this recipe in summer and fall especially… It’s comfort food to me. I’ve also been known to eat the leftovers for breakfast with a bit of maple syrup… To each her own! (By the way, fresh chopped jalapenos or a can of chopped chili peppers add a nice zing if you can go there….)

Set oven to 350 degrees

1 box Jiffy corn bread mix
1 15 oz. can of creamed corn
1 can regular corn (or 2 cups fresh off the cob)
1 stick melted butter
1 cup sour cream

Mix all ingredients together. Bake in a greased cast iron pan (or any baking dish) for 60 minutes or until lightly brown on top.

* that clean house means it lasts for about 5 minutes

* that kids’ art is cooler than any you can buy

* that I really have a loud voice too

* that humble takes on new meaning when you are a parent

* that the dollar store is the kid mecca (and kind of the mama mecca too)

* that socks don’t get lost in the dryer, they actually end up scattered all over our house

* that guilt is something we do to ourselves (no one is looking that closely)

* that poopie talk would be so commonplace in any home, or with other adults

* that laws should be passed against those little wires that hold new toys in their boxes!

Spectacular vintage doors

Several years ago, when John and I moved from our old farmhouse to a brand new home that we had built in the countryside, I was nervous about losing the charm and character of our old home. You know… all the cracks, crevices, and other nuances that I’d fallen in love with over the years. New construction can be intimidating when you’re trying to blend old world charm with modern conveniences… John and I knew we wanted to infuse vintage architectural elements into our new space, to make our home feel as thought it had been around for centuries (but still have TiVo and a dishwasher!!!). For me, these rustic old doors and unique hardware are just one way of bringing vintage character to a newer space.

We found a soulful pair of vintage Asian doors that grace our foyer closet; and an antique set of French doors in the grand style (ornate wood & iron) as the entrance into our great room. We absolutely cherish them there… Even our boys seem to love them, and want to know more about them, since they often use our foyer to build forts and other imaginative worlds inside…

Even if creating a stately entrance (or fort) isn’t at the top of your list… there are other cool ways to infuse the character of old doors into your space. Try hinging several old doors together as a charming room divider, or a striking backdrop behind a couch or settee. Why not use them to flank a large picture window, or an interior doorway? (Who says the doors need to open and close??) Other possibilities include turning a single vintage door into a table, desk, or headboard… (And yes, I’ve done all three!)

Check out the following online treasure troves for vintage doors and antique hardware…

Even if you aren’t ready to take the plunge… I hope you find a moment to meander… they’re definitely a juicy, visual feast!!

Finding the balance…

I think this is one question I am asked more than any other… The how do you find balance question. I ask my mom about this sometimes… she used to run a company with my father and raised three kids and also was searching for balance. She always seemed so cool and collected to me… made time to get her hair done, was chic and interesting, always put a fabulous meal on the table for a family dinner every night, and still came to all the sporting games, etc! She didn’t overthink it… and I am trying to follow in her footsteps!!

I will do my best to demystify what you may think about how I find balance… Perhaps this will stir up even more questions… for all of us. Just know that I, too, am still learning!

Perfection. I ditched the notion of “perfection” long ago. I’m not even sure it was ever a part of me. I knew in life striving for balance was key. I see people that want perfect… and it’s a wee bit scary if you ask me. What is perfect anyway?? A lawn with no brown spots? (Who is looking?)… A hair not out of place? (Ewww… a little bed head is far sexier!) No dirt on the floor? (Oh, puleeeazze!!! What is the point of it… too much stress if you ask me.) I’m more of a… this is how I like it, sure it’s got its bumps, but at least it is moving forward and in the direction that pleases me… and sister, I am all about “the living”… kind-of-a-girl! Do you read me?? This is my number one rule of finding balance… Perfection is a great ulcer builder.

Date Night. This one is simple… or at least it is to me. I am not saying you need to spend a fortune… but you can certainly benefit from some time with the hubby… or whomever it is you dig! It does take some planning… and possibly some favors. (Grandma… friends…?) I figure in the end it will cost us far less than any marriage counseling would… And really, I love this guy, and being with him (without the kiddies now and again) is something that is a top priority for finding balance. Now if you are a single person, then a date with you and you alone, or whomever, is still a major bonus… good Lord, go see a movie, or get your nails done… but by all means, do something for YOU!!!!

The Clean House. I know… It’s my fantasy too. But again, who is looking that closely? I have been known to walk around with a rag and the spray bottle squirting at anything that isn’t moving… but, getting all lathered up over the house not being all spiffy is something I did need to learn once our 4 little boys started kicking up the dust. Mind you….I have my “moments”… My are you all kidding me, do I look like I’m your *^%#$@#$&* full-time servant?!?! (moments)… But mostly toys are strewn about… and a row of crumbs seems nearly permanent under the kitchen counter where the boys eat breakfast… and I now have my kids cleaning the toilets (don’t worry, non toxic cleaners… yippee!!!) since the stream (the pee-pee stream for those of you with girls) seems to only make it into the bowl partially… the other part flows down the porcelain sides and neatly pools on the ledge and forms a solid layer in a few short hours. (Too much information…?) And the dog is always wet, and then she walks through dirt… Most of the drawers and closets are tidy and organized… but by God I do have junk drawers… and I celebrate them!! Where the hell else do the little things go? Basically, we do our best… and if you came over, you would see a pretty clean house in decent order, with a happy family that is really living there.

Make a Decision. I suppose because time is short I make fairly quick decisions on most everything. I think it helps me move forward on many things without any one thing sitting on my brain and draining the life out of me. Now it’s not to say that I don’t have major life decisions that need to be pondered… and sometimes a bit of time does help. But generally I don’t let the little things… (paint colors, garden this and that, entertaining… blah, blah, blah) sit with me for too long… that just sucks the life out of me.

Don’t Get your Undies in a Bundle. We all have things that we get bent out of shape over… and mostly I really try hard be as easy going as I can be. My husband calls me easy going but intense. I am Type A, there is no question, so I have had to learn over the years when and how to push… and when and how to stop… aka, balance!

Be a Planner. This goes hand-in-hand with everything above and allows those things to happen more easily. I am a planner… but I am aware I am NOT an over-planner. This would backfire for me as I need holes in my schedule to feel as human as possible. When too much is in my schedule I start to feel the tilt of balance fall off… and I don’t like that feeling. So I try to plan when and where it makes sense for me, for our company, and for our family. I try to see what is directly in front of me, and then down the road and off to the sides. This way I can zig and zag and feel OK with whichever way it all falls.

No Worrying Allowed! Easy to say, I know, but I try very hard to not be a worrier. I find it drains all my energy, and is mostly unnecessary. So I avoid it at all costs. I try to view things in my life as natural progressions, even when they go downhill or become difficult sometimes… and yes, that happens to all of us. I try to see most everything as an opportunity… to learn, to grow, etc. It’s easy to assume other people don’t have problems that they are dealing with… Believe me, WE ALL DO… It’s just a matter of how you choose to view and handle them.

Keep it Simple.
Dinner… entertaining… wardrobe… hair… relationships… plans… life! You may not believe this coming from me, the woman who loves layers… layers of life. But in the midst of it all… I am ever striving to keep it simple… an ever-evolving lesson for me. I will always be learning… but I am pretty sure I’ve got the hang of it… Well, most of the time!!!

Trays galore!

I am enamored with eclectic trays… everything from antique silver to woven rattan… hand-painted ceramic to wooden inlay… You name it, I collect them… and I truly use them… everywhere! We put together a video to showcase some of the ways I’ve put trays to use in my kitchen… but you can certainly find a multitude of other ways to display and use trays throughout your home!

Trays are an obsession of mine, for sure… They just help to anchor little vignettes on my counter top. But they aren’t just for decoration – they’re actually super functional! Each tray helps to organize a range of goodies, keeping them in sight and at my fingertips. So… I have one for oils and vinegars near our cook top. I have another one for soaps and lotions near our kitchen sink. I have yet another one for all my tea essentials (think sugar cubes, spoons, tea packets, honey, etc). I even have one sitting beneath a fabulous urn which holds all of our larger wooden spoons and other kitchen utensils. Plus, as an added bonus, trays make all the “stuff” so simple to move about when cooking, cleaning, entertaining, etc.!

If you don’t have a lot of counter space in your kitchen, no worries! Why not keep a small tray on your bathroom counter to hold all of your lotions and potions? Trays and platters make wonderful accent pieces on a side table…just load them up with a small collection of treasured keepsakes. Oversized trays are a great way to keep stacks of magazines in order on your coffee table. Or consider using a beautiful tray at the base of a gorgeous centerpiece in the middle of your dining room table with votive candles sprinkled here and there. You can even hang most trays on your wall with an inexpensive plate hanger or a length of ribbon. The possibilities are truly limitless… I’d love to hear some of your ideas!

Decadent crab appetizer

My dear loves. I know you are ever searching for something tasty to make ahead and keep in your freezer for last-minute feeding frenzies. (This falls into my plan ahead and you’ll never be overwhelmed by entertaining theory.) Well, I know you will flip over this dandy! A dear friend of my mother’s shared it with her years ago, and is allowing us to share it with you! Thank you Marilyn! This is one of our family’s all time favorites… Of course it is remarkably simple, intensely decadent (my favorite kind!), and if you don’t pop one in your mouth the instant you put them out on a pretty tray, they will be gone!!! Keep a stash of these on hand this summer… this way you can spend more time chatting with your family!

12 english muffins cut in half
4 Tbs. mayonnaise
2 sticks butter softened (I know… but you will love it!)
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 pound imitation crab or lobster
3 five ounce jars Kraft old English sharp cheese

Combine all ingredients (except muffins) and mix thoroughly. Spread the mixture on the English muffin halves. Cut each muffin into quarters and freeze on cookie sheets. When frozen, transfer to ziplock bags. Broil from frozen state until bubbly.
