Tracy Porter Video: Do You Ever serve veggies in your ramekins?

Do you ever serve vegetable side dishes in your little sturdy ceramic ramekins?! Its the only way we function in the Porter household with four busy boys. Easy, easy, easy!!! Everyone has their perfect portion and each of the kids feels like its a special treat (since its not just another scoop of something on their plate). In the morning, we serve fresh fruit salad the same way. I actually think it tastes sweeter when you get to eat out of a petite little ramekin! No fuss. Easy to serve special treat for everyone. And why not?!!!

Don’t you want to live life as beautifully as you can..(I sure do)?! Sometimes its the simple little things that make the experience more delicious!

Do you ever… make fortunes for your darlings?

A dose of good fortune… wishes of well… flirtatious adoration… I so love to give (and get) them… such fun! A simple little project that can turn any casual moment into an event. I like to make them with the kids… (Click here for the tins!) The combinations and patterns are lively… and the sentiments loaded with even more folly. We pop a little treat (aka chocolate) inside… and we’re off……

Join the lighthearted fun!!!

Kisses,
Tracy

Do you ever… declare your love in the snow?

2009-02-13-max-heart

Last weekend it was just beautiful outside. It was nearly 30 degrees… a veritable balmy day! The boys all went out to play… and the usual sorts of things go on out there… they go into the pasture, run around with our donkey (Rodeo Jack) and our goat (Mailbox)… then they throw snowballs at each other for a while… hiding behind the mounds and mounds of snow everywhere, shaking swords at each other screaming, laughing. They are boys after all… and chasing, pushing, throwing, and weaponry are all sort of the norm for them. (I make them sound so barbaric… they really are lambs at heart…)

Anyway… Later that day we were going to some friends’ house for dinner and Max was just so excited to show us something he made in the snow. Naturally, being the mother of four boys my mind goes to… did he pee a design in the snow?? Oh, joy… Or, is it a fort he dug out? What, what! Then sure enough, we happen upon it… a snow heart that he carved with his hands out of a random chunk of icy goodness. Sort of melts my own.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
love, love,
Max…… and me

Do you ever… serve fruit in pretty teacups?

2009-02-11-fruit-in-teacups

It’s the little things, right? You know… a handful of delicious strawberries sprinkled with some confectioners’ sugar in a teacup on a silver platter… what a blissful sight to behold! I know we all fall into our own routines…… We do the same things the same way, we buy the same groceries, we serve on the same plates, we wear the same three pair of pants over and over, even though we have many more! So sometimes to shake it up a bit, I walk into my pantry and grab a different plate or vessel. I will purposely go out of my way to view something differently! It’s not a huge challenge… it’s just a different point of view. Sometimes I will think of some historical figure like Wallace Simpson (the duchess, that is) and wonder… now what would Wallace do? It just gives me a moment to think differently and to step into someone else’s shoes for five seconds… sort of fun, don’t you think!

A few things to consider…

* Buy some pretty candies and layer them (like kids do with colored sand), one kind over the next in a huge glass bowl… Even a darling hand-made tag would add a whimsical touch!

* Soup for dinner… serve it from a teapot!

* Set your entire table with different plates, glasses, etc… mix in some vintage… and anything else you have that will make you smile. Think magically!

* Do tell us… What do you do to shake it up around your house, my loves??

Do you ever… send a delightful surprise all wrapped with love?

2009-01-09-gus-with-book

I adore children’s books (yes, another passion to share!!)… Even before we had our own four boys, I belonged to the children’s book of the month club. Now I have a really great excuse to buy more books as our boys LOVE to read as well! Well, just before Christmas we received a box at the studio… upon opening it we discovered it was filled with books from a marvelous children’s book author who I was very aware of, Kimberly Willis Holt. I do hope you know of Kimberly because I nearly dropped on the floor that she sent us all of her books…… autographed (yippee… can you hear me clapping!) to the boys and our family……! I first could not believe what a kind and incredibly thoughtful gesture… I opened each book to read her lovely and inspiring thoughts to our children as I was all welled up with tears! For Kimberly to reach out to us, to tell us that what are doing is inspiring to her… and that she wanted to share her work!! Well… words cannot describe the joy! I had to share her work with you as I know you will love it as much as we do. I was already familiar with her Piper Reed series… but did not know of her other books.

2009-01-09-skinny-brown-dog

I will tell you that Skinny Brown Dog and Waiting for Gregory are regular reading in our home. I am a ridiculous sap… I was all teary the first time I read Skinny Brown Dog… it is a darling story that will simply melt you. I have to say the illustrations in Waiting for Gregory are over the top inspiring… beautiful collages and enchanting drawings by Gabi Swiatkowska that will make you smile. If you have your own small children, or you are a grandparent… or you just love gorgeous books and delicious writing, then these are must have delectable books from a thoughtful darling woman with a very big heart!! Thanks again, Kimberly!

xoxo,
Tracy

Do you ever… wait in the snow for a bluebird sighting?

2009-02-06-do-you-ever-bluebird

I just had to share this, my loves! (And even more of a reason as to why our “community” we are creating will go up soon!) Sandi, from Cape Cod, a regular blogette… sent our company several fabulous photos of bluebirds that showed up at her home, looking for spring. We asked Sandi if we could share with you… I know you love nature as much as we do! Our bluebirds show up here in Wisconsin about mid-March… hardly seems possible that I will need to get out there and clean out their little nest boxes soon… but I know they will come again! You must know, Sandi tells us she waited in the snow on her patio for 20 minutes to get the best shot… Oh, my girl, you are one of us! We cracked up and said we would have done the exact same thing…… waiting for beauty to land… and it always will. Thanks, Sandi! xoxoxo

Do you ever… think spring will come again?

2009-02-04-winter-gate

Oh… you know I am an optimist at heart. I take these photos of our still beautiful winters… haunting in their beauty. Of course in the midst of it, I think about things I miss from spring…… the smells of the earth, the warmth of the sun… the light that stays with us beyond our dinnertime. Then I realize… winter… I do love the calm. The cold, the heavy snow on each branch…… the quiet… the still of it all. The feeling of comfort that makes me nest and nestle in. I want to dig in and create more depth in our home, I want to cook rich warm earthy comfort foods. I want our house to be filled the old-fashioned scents that take me back to my childhood. I light candles, I dim lights… I light a fire and sit and watch and read and luxuriate in the simplicity of every moment. I wake when it’s dark… I feed the animals when it’s dark… we eat dinner and breakfast when it’s dark… Somehow it really is comforting……… Then, slowly, minute by minute she comes… each day a little sparkle of daylight fills the morning and the evening.

Spring will come… and when she does, we will appreciate all of her smells and colors and newness again… again… again!!

Unique and personalized gift ideas for them or you! Monogrammed, personalized, spectacular!

Imagine giving a gift so unique you are squirming just thinking about the idea! That’s the kind of gift I want to give! I want them swooning…! I adore the idea of personalized gifts, monogrammed gifts… you know, things that are just about that person. Having said that, these ideas are also ideal for you to keep in mind if you are having a party or just want to have something remarkable around your home that is all you! I love the idea of having our own Porter family match books for instance! How cool is that! Napkins too… why not! I buy cocktail napkins so often… I may as well buy some that are just ours… add a fun little personalized ditty and I am set! The possibilities are endless (could I say that any more?). Check out some of my favorite picks!

2009-02-02-brownie-pops* Can you handle it?? Personalized brownie pops! Luscious little bites to give as a gift, or for a party you may be having? I say order some for the freezer as well, my love!

2009-02-02-napkins* A snappy pop of color and whatever it is you want to say… monogram some napkins for you and for someone else. I cannot imagine what fun it would be to order these as a gift for someone who loves to entertain… An incredibly thoughtful gift, indeed!

2009-02-02-drinks-tub* This monogrammed drinks tub would be the most fabulous gift for about anyone on my list! I love the idea of this at a backyard BBQ… bring it full, and leave it for them! I would love one to take down to our pond… We load up the kids’ wagon and fill up a galvanized tub now, but this one really rocks!

2009-02-02-seed-pouches* These personalized seed pouches are reason alone for me to plan a garden party in the spring. What a spectacular table you could set with one of these gems in front of each guest! Hello, pretty! Then, everyone gets to go home and plant their flower seeds. Again, thoughtful, imaginative… simply dashing!

A little garden folly… to inspire your desire

Perhaps it’s the snowy day we are having… or that my ducks haven’t been able to swim since the pond froze up months ago? I have forever had this fantasy of a marvelous garden folly, filled with peacocks, doves, and other critters… something very Bohemian and funky. I imagine it will be made of a mix of interesting materials… a bit of stone, some wire, thatching, mossy goodness. Surely if you speak this language, you are panting about these thoughts as I am. I am a big believer that it is essential to always have these sorts of thoughts… things to inspire us on our journey… things that make us look at the world around us with open eyes. Things that make us realize there really is so much more to consider……

These are a few jewels to share… crazy good, aren’t they?

2009-01-30-folly1Simple in its beauty. Maybe a bit more of a shed than I have in mind, but fantasy nonetheless.

2009-01-30-folly2Chinoiserie…Well, you really cannot go wrong with any of it. The architecture is stunning, always colors of intense spiciness, the foliage… and waterfalls don’t hurt… add those to the ever-growing list.

2009-01-30-folly3A wee bit of a Gothic tree house, wouldn’t you say? Quite marvelous, really. I’m all for my gardening but… One could could just move in with a bottle of wine and a laptop… or even just a pillow and thick down mattress with a cashmere blanket… nap time, anyone?

2009-01-30-folly4Feels inspired by Antoni Gaudi… I am a huge fan. Love all the funkiness, imperfect to a T.

2009-01-30-folly5Words really cannot improve upon this lovely sight… quite possibly my favorite yet… waiting for me…

Scrumptious art prints… fabulous on the eyes AND the billfold!

OK… you know I am on the non-stop exploration for added goods for the walls… I am not a “wall art snob” by any means, my loves! I will put up just about anything as long as it makes me beam and looks smashing! I have always been a devotee of art prints. I suppose it all started when I was living in Paris and I had my first apartment. I was in need of some cool stuff for my walls… but no cash-ola… so I didn’t get very far. I then discovered the ginormous plethora of art prints available to the world. So if this is new to you… just think “posters” that essentially come in any shape or size imaginable and in any possible theme that you could most likely conjure up. My very cool mother-in-law Margo has a fabulous home decorated to the nines, and she even uses these in her kitchen. She has them framed and put under glass, which I would advise as well, as it just finishes them off nicely. As a bonus, many places that you buy these from even offer a framing service. I have no problem with these anywhere in my home, from the boys’ room to our luscious red library/den. Keep your eyes and mind open, and you will be floored by the awesome selection. A few things to consider…

2009-01-28-library-light

* A small library light over a poster print is spectacular.

* Consider an art print that is out of your normal “decorating comfort zone”… You will add an eclectic twist to your home at a splendid price.

* Try an art print mixed in with what you already have… like on your “London wall” perhaps.

* Don’t forget museum shops… These are some of my favorite places to hunt for superb art prints.

* Feeling crafty my loves? Decoupage one of these beauties onto an old door… Hello, pretty!

Be mine… kitschy Valentines from our studio to you!

2009-Valentines

My darlings, we thought we’d share some of our original Valentine creations with you… ready to print and give to all your dear hearts! (Click HERE to get the printer-friendly version.) Add a hand-written sentiment onto the back… I love a fine felt-tip pen for this, or even metallic gold or silver would be perfectly lovely. And don’t forget to keep a handful of these for yourself… tuck a few into your vanity mirror… or dangle several from a lovely scrap of ribbon… around a door or window frame, perhaps… any tiny nook in need of a little pick-me-up, really… ooh, how spirited and fun! Of course, you can print these out on regular copy paper… or try colored paper, card stock, glossy photo paper, even vellum. Your local craft store will no doubt have endless possibilities for you to spread the love!! xoxoxo, T.

Porter Family Sunday Night Pot Roast

2009-01-23-pot-roast

I adore… (yes, strong words) Pot Roast. Really truly… this is something I crave. I love making it on a Sunday afternoon in the fall or winter… any chilly day, really. It is as simple as it gets ~ you cannot mess this up. You also can add so many things to this, my basic recipe. I usually don’t just stick to this… (not to scare you off)! More than anything because I cannot help but constantly try to improve my standbys. (READ: I cannot leave anything alone!) I will often add in leftover chopped bacon (from our breakfast). I also love three hearty spoonfuls of beef demi-glace… (I keep this in my refrigerator at all times… I even love a pinky full of it to stir my own taste buds.) I love adding in any root veggies or potatoes. (Add potatoes in the last 1-1/2 hour.) You get where I’m going… This is a good one to play around with and spice up to your liking. Even a bit of cumin or cayenne is ideal. Then the french girl in me cannot help topping it off with chopped parsley… this was my grandmother’s touch always. I can still smell it in her kitchen. So, on that note… try it out… make it your own. Fabulous with a red wine… but then, what isn’t?? Cheers!

p.s. As I write this from my luscious red library, with classical music playing, I can smell the kitchen… John is making our favorite family meatloaf… I will share soon… And God bless him, my darlings… He just brought me a glass of wine… Thank goodness it is 6pm!!

(Click here for Tracy Porter’s printable recipe!)

Porter Family Sunday Night Pot Roast

4 lb. chuck or rump roast (can be smaller or larger ~ will not matter, dears)
1 head of garlic, chopped (or about 10 cloves)
salt and pepper, to taste
olive oil
3 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
2 Tbsp. flour
1 onion, chopped
1 bag of frozen pearl onions (or approx. 2 cups)
2 cups baby carrots
2 celery stalks, chopped
1 cup red wine (nothing too pricey)
3 cups beef stock (I am okay with store bought… time saver)
1 28 oz. can of chopped tomatoes

Mix together salt, pepper and flour… then make a paste by adding in vinegar. Rub roast with the paste, just mash it right onto every spot, nook, and cranny. Heat 2 Tbsp. olive oil in heavy pan (I use my dutch oven). Brown roast nicely all over. Remove roast and set aside. Add another Tbsp. olive oil to pan, add chopped onions, garlic, carrots, and celery. Cook over medium heat until onions are soft… 7-10 minutes should do. Mix often to avoid burning. Add red wine & stock, pearl onions and the roast back into pan. Cover pan and simmer. I typically will cook a roast of this size for 3-4 hours, turning every 1/2 hour or so. When the meat feels very soft and you can easily pierce it, it is done. Remove the meat and shred it. I do this on a chopping board and basically pull it apart quite easily with two forks. It will literally shred. Add meat back to pan. Taste and season. What a happy, marvelous dinner!

Confessions of a closet lover… tips for organizing your linen closet!

2009-01-21-linen-closet

True… I have a thing for closets, especially linen closets… but I’ll take any closet, really, for the sake of this story. Have loved ‘em really for oh so long. If I am to pinpoint it, I am certain it began with my grandmother. (Seems much in my life has!) She didn’t have a large linen closet, but it was interesting and big enough to climb into and dig around a bit… get snoopy and all. She had boxes of costume jewelry to dig through and smaller cigar boxes hidden under things with photos and other goodies. Little nuggets hidden everywhere ~ even a large Cadbury chocolate bar with a shiny gold wrapper could be found. (I will also confess that I am a nosy parker ~ I will always look in someone’s medicine cabinet… There, it’s out. I’ve admitted it publicly, now you’ll never have me over!!)

Back to my story… So what I think happened to me along the way is that I became a bit closet obsessive. A girl (or home) just cannot have enough closets. Every home I have looked at, or lived in, or built, to date… Well, it is one of my first questions… How many closets? I like them big. I like them deep. I like them lit. I am actually sounding a wee bit high maintenance, and really, you all know me enough by now to know that is one thing I am not… But maybe in the closet department I am just a little bit needy. I really love to open up a closet and take inventory. You know… what’s in here, what do we need, blah, blah, blah. Since we’ve popped out four little munchkins, my organizing efforts have taken sort of a backseat. As an example, our upstairs main linen closet seems to have become a fun hiding spot, play area, take the sheets off the shelves and make little tents like thieving little nesting mice… kind of a closet. Yes, our boys get in there and cause a ruckus… It does make me laugh most of the time. So let me get to my point, my loves… I have recently pulled out all the goods, and now she is a beacon of loveliness… all my ducks in a row… (Until the cowboys come back to set up camp, that is!)

Here’s my linen closet organizing how-to tips… Always nice to have a fresh start!

* Drag everything out of that closet, for starters ~ it will only get better from here.

* Wash down the shelves with something you love the smell of. For me it’s the original Murphy’s oil soap. Old- fashioned clean… Love it!

* If you need to re-paint, do it now. Maybe a smashing bright cheery color like brilliant apple green, or dark and sexy like chocolate brown. ( I would only go dark if your lighting is excellent.)

metal-label-holder

* If you are supremely into organizing, or generally cool ideas, you could do a little metal label holder on each shelf to let the world know that pillow cases go here, for instance. (So librarian of me, I know.)

* Sort your goods. Determine if you like sheets sets all in perfect bundles… or, like me, individual stacks of goods, meaning all pillowcases go in one spot, all queen size fitted sheets in another spot.

canvas-bins

* If your linen closet also serves as a place to store toilet paper, toiletries, and the like… consider storing those in canvas bins or even wicker or metal.

* What will you keep, what will you toss? Now “toss” is a relative term for me, it’s more like… will it become a costume for the kids? (Take pillow cases… Max just recently cut out the neck spot and top corners for a slip-on funky costume of a bright orange case that was ready for the trash.)

* Can any of your sheets be re-classified to table cloths or picnic blankets…? If not, consider donating your goods to your local thrift store or Goodwill.

* Consider the location of all the goods. All bedding near bedding… all towels, wash cloths, and the like together. Anything that gets less use or is seasonal should go near the top shelves.

home-comforts-book

* If you are really into organizing, check out Cheryl Mendelson’s book Home Comforts. This one… well, she is the queen of clean and organizing. Her home must be the mecca… kind of a scary thought. I don’t want her in my closets…… today, anyway!

Fast Fashion! Buy it once… alter it constantly!

2009-01-19-fast-fashion

I have always been one of those girls who loves to alter my wares. I do this in my home and my wardrobe. It is simply my tinkering nature. I tend to buy things and keep most of them forever… the few things I do get rid of were just not meant to be. I find that once I own something for quite some time… I will want to liven it up. So just speaking about the wardrobe… I will use as an example, a simple cardigan. Typically cardigans… while a staple and must-have wardrobe item for all of us… bore me to death. They are the perfect thing to have at with your creative wand! Little wallflowers that they are, they just need a little nip, tuck and… a jolt of fabulousness from somewhere! Do tell me that you are starting to keep a stash of “stuff”…… i.e., the pack rat in you is alive and well, darling! That IS where you will pull from and feel like the Diana Vreeland in you is coming alive!

So… starting with your plain Jane cardi, you can…

* Add three vintage pins onto the front… and I am not talking little ones! Make them glorious and showy… be fearless!

* Ditch those mother of pearl buttons and get your tail to the craft store… Or better yet, dig into your own button bin and mix them up… each one different and delicious (don’t be afraid to widen the button hole).

* Sew a gorgeous wide and splendid ribbon onto each cuff.

* Get out your acrylic paints, fabric paints (or get some)… and do a little simple doodling onto the backside… anything, my love… get fancy or just be avant-garde in any way you want.

* Do some embroidery on top of your cardi… Use all one color… maybe Google some smart stitchery ideas… I like a simple chain stitch and those little French knots…

* Add a pretty velvet ribbon along the placket edge (that’s the part where your button or zippers are located).

* Make a run to the craft or fabric store and buy your monogram letters… so Laverne and Shirley… I desperately need to monogram more cool things!
