My Favorite Thanksgiving Essential Kitchen Tools

My dear holiday planners….I am thinking of you as I make my list of stuff that I have LOST or need to replace since last Thanksgiving. I am thanking the holiday gods that I don’t need it all replaced as I still need to save for my kids college fund. (hate to start calling it the “turkey fund”…but then again….hmmm) How on earth could one loose a roasting rack….I have not put it into my washer/dryer….so where the #$$&&*** is it!!? Have my kids turned it into a LEGO contraption holder thing-a-ma-bob? Could it be on the beach….half buried….My oven mitts are nearly gone and buried as well….the ones I found are so fabulous….you must try them! Julia Child would be embarrassed (not to mention my own mother, who threw out my cookie sheets last year, because they “looked so used”) by my mitts.

1. Potato Ricer….need I say more. I broke mine, this one is better for sure. Don’t ask, how one breaks a potato ricer, I broke my toe nail clippers too….

2. Carving Boards….plural for sure. These are marvy because you have that cool little area around the edge to catch all the goodness that flows from the mother bird. John (my darling) got some of these for his birthday…I love when he gets something and it secretly thrills me too…shhhh…..(is that so selfish ?….no, sharing the love…I think).

3. Roaster with Rack….note “with rack.” Again…what on earth….I need to go up and look under our bed, maybe I put our rack there?

4. Bulb Baster….nothing fancy, but a must-have. (kids dig these too….really fun in the sink…you know)

5. Gravy Separator….If this is new to you, get one…good, cheap fun and healthy stuff. Easy to use…..fat separates from the goodness…

6. Brining bags….. I have always used my gargantuan lobster pot, I could cook a yacht in it. But I am ordering these, isn’t this so smart!!! Do you brine?….we’ll chat later!

7. Instant Read Thermometer….pretty much a must-have, unless you are psychic? (I had to spell check that word, so clearly I am not..bummer)

8. Rolling Pin…I don’t need one, I use my old one….but these no-handle ones are cool. Could be used as a weapon if needed….keep one by your back door….

9. Carving Knife Set…ok, really a great gift. Not that anyone needs the “set”…you could use any bog old fork, but this is slick…ehh?

10. Oven Mitt….these really rock. Mine really are calling for some reincarnation…I think they want to come back as cats.

11. Kitchen Twine…so simple. Get some. My boys take WAY too much of mine, for tying all their super heros together and hanging them off of doors etc. I use it for turkey trussing and such.

12. Roasting Rack….If you already have the pan, then this is for you…and me.

Gardening just makes our hearts beat a-flutter… we call it Soul Food. A magical thing, really,…as it relaxes, excites, beautifies, enhances, challenges and inspires us all at once. Gardens and gardening are truly a three-dimensional art form…. Ever-changing (sometimes overnight)! At times an entire garden or landscaping project can be overwhelming… so we find ourselves breaking gardens down into bite-size pieces that we can enjoy… try this if you don’t already. We call them garden “rooms”. Little slices of the yard or property that take on their own charm; their own personality. Makes the journey so amazing… and we get to play in the dirt at a pace that works for us (not much time at this point in our lives…. But we do savor it so…).

Now for you….. if you have a yard, a plot of green, a courtyard, a single window box, an estate in a far-off land….. we do hope you delight in the layers of the garden the way we do. Enjoy the mix of highs and lows… consider the bones of the garden… the architecture of the plants..… the textures, the colors, the sounds, the earthy smells….. delight in YOUR VERSION of a little paradise. Keep adding to it,… changing…. tucking in more goodness….. Savoring its SOUL…as it is so good for YOURS.

It seems that you darlings are embracing a more eclectic existence with us… Isn’t it more fun? The scavenging for interesting treasures… the throwing-it-together of it all… Just so wildly addictive. I do believe that it’s our passionate curiosity that pulls us towards the exploration. (Mind you, may not always be rummaging through the rainy streets of China… Perhaps it’s as simple as a stolen moment in the drafty attic that forces our hearts to flutter.) Wherever you are… Wherever you are going… We encourage you to bring back a little something. A remembrance, if you will… something that rests in your soul and that takes you back. We’ve found that if you start to practice this gathering-as-you-go lifestyle… all things, all cultures, all colors, textures, all worlds will magically seep into yours. Oh what a joyous way to spend a lifetime!

(BTW girls… If we may be so bold… a gift card from R. Crusoe is always a welcome… Sarah and I have lots of traveling to get to… and the gesture would be most appreciated… Just remember that you are always invited… and… be sure not to skimp.) LOL!!!

Some of us dream in diamonds… others of shoes… some of gold. We… not so much. We dream in GARDEN. It’s our number one topic… infinite conversation… Now we aren’t just talking about dirt and shovels and Latin names for every species… We’re taking about gardening on a far grander scale. The textures, the fragrance, the sketches, the tear sheets, the architecture, the fantasy of it all. We always say that when we retire, the greenhouse will go up… and we’ll spend our days happily starting herbs from seed… and propagating fruit trees into espaliers… You see, it’s this kind of talk that feeds our souls. We have young families that need tending… therefore the weeds in the perennial border will have to wait for another day, another moment… the boxwoods that need mulching… the cedars that need trimming… the woodlands that need an under planting of spring bulbs… All for another day… BUT, at least we can chatter with you about it while all our gardens sleep under a drift of white.
