Do You Ever… ?

Keep little things from your children, or any children in your life……that simply bring you joy !? I do….I love the lilliputian goodies our boys make….sometimes it’s a mother’s day thing, other times it’s an I love you thing. I put these little treasures all over our house…I find they mix in beautifully with antiques and other “grown-up” finds. I hang them on our walls, put them on our consoles right with sterling cups and other lovelies. I find they bring even more soul into our home…and that’s just it………..it is “our” home….and I know that when our boys see the wonderful creations they make mixed in with everything else….it makes them feel prideful and delighted to know we truly find elegance and joy in everything they do. No matter what sort of thing it is….I love them….sweet innocent little things that bring a smile to your day no matter….just like kids.

Cheers and Simple Discoveries,
xxx,
T.

Yes, Tracy, I do. I have 4 kids and I took the best clay art piece done in school and have it proudly displayed in our bookcase in our study.

POCKETFUL OF INSPIRATION: Pulling the keys out of my purse and taking a drive in the country. I’m a city girl that yearns to live in the country. I grew up in the country and it is a dream I have to get back there, so sometimes I will drive and take a different route when I am out there and hope to see an old house along the way. It truly inspires and delights me. Garden centers in the spring inspire me as well, to get out there and get planting.

Tracy,

I finally got to listen to your radio show yesterday! I so enjoyed your challenge for us to find inspiration! Actually, while listening to your show, I happened to be working on my wedding day scrapbook and I was filled with inspiration: inspiration to continue loving my husband unconditionally, inspiration to build on our friendship, and inspiration to keep filling our lives with goodness be it cooking, walking outside, or just snuggling on the couch.

Many blessings to you and your family!

Pocket of Inspiration: I drive about 45 minutes from home, and sit on the lovely, powdery, white sand beaches we have here in Central Florida. I sit alone with a book, a journal, my Bible, whatever… and it clears my mind and my stress like nobody’s business.
When I find myself wishing I lived somewhere else, I remind myself I live where there is beauty… maybe we don’t have mountains or snow or even seasons for that matter… but if I open my eyes and live in the moment, there is beauty and inspiration to be found just about anywhere…

I do the same here in my cozy cottage which is why it has become so very, very cozy. Traces of my lovely nine year old are everywhere. Mixed in with my treasures are her’s. Those simple soft smooth stones from a far away lake. The leaves picked up and held onto while walking under the oaks. Flowers for pressing along with fallen dragon flys. Sweet and darling artwork that I stare at over and over and say how wonderful is this or how amazing is that. Stuffed animal friends, first letters and hand written notes notes. Its all part of my life and I couldn’t, wouldn’t want it any other way! Blessings creative friend…to you and your cowboys! Eden

Hi Valery, when the thing fell of my son’s navel I remember my husband and I chasing the dog around the house trying to get it back after we realized what had happened. How gross is that? We didn’t save it.
But I did matte and frame all my sons’ preschool art and hang them over the stairs, mostly the process pieces before they old enough to be representational at all so they’re all lovely, colorful and abstract. There’s an orange one and I remember my son telling me at the time it was supposed to be Simba.
But there is one he made in preschool where he drove a Hot Wheels car through green paint and ran it up and down the page and then finger dotted blue and white over the stems, which made bluebonnets. A Texas thing. He had a lovely preschool teacher who had all kinds of great ideas for process art, Mrs. Mann. Funny he’s seventeen now and I still remember her name.

Just yesterday my 11 year old son noticed a flower painting on canvas that he made at the age of 7 proudly displayed in an amoire with all more “expensive pieces”. He started talking about the process of making that painting and asked if I would get him some canvas panels to make more!!! I was so delighted since I teach a kid’s art class but my own children are more athletic than artists. Of course, I already purchased the canvas and I’m looking foward to creating with my son for these are the little things that I will always remember.
My Pocketful of Inspiration is Blue Sky Basin, a back ski bowl in Vail, CO. If you haven’t been there, I can’t explain it for its truely magical like a piece of heaven here on earth!!!! I long to go back there. Has anyone been there???

TRACY…kid’s art treasures do have a very special place in a mom’s heart. My mother-n-law still has “Monster Days” hanging in her garage(it’s befitting there)which is a story and depiction my husband wrote when he was 10…on that good old creamy oversized paper!I can still smell it! Now she’s a “keeper”! My favorites are the hand prints in the plster of paris…they blend well and encased in a heart shape says it all…i always get sappy when I take them down and look on the back to see who and when…my husband has a basketball pillow on his home office chair(the kid’s purchased at Candy Cane Lane)…it is so flattened! And their (not so artful)but loveable ceramic holders keeps his pens and pencils…he wouln’t have it any other way…thanks TRACY for stirring the joys that our children’s art can bring into our lives daily…have you ever…eaten taco dip for dinner?!?!!…i did last week and think I might do it again tonight!…have a joyful weekend ALL!!! Tracy – I sure do!!!!! Today is my son’s 15th birthday – he is my baby and is now well over 6 feet tall. I still have their little things all over the house and I love it….It is particularly helpful on those teenage days that can be so trying… when I see these things, or pictures on the wall of when they were so baby-faced, I am able to keep all in perspective!!!thanks for the reminder!

I have a question for the group – do people have “favourite birthday cakes”? in their family – this is appropriate for you these days, Tracy! In our family we all have the same thing – chocolate cake with boiled 7 minute frosting. we cannot get enough of it!!!

Yes for me too. My son is grown now, but instead of birthday cards, etc., I asked him to write me something on his own. I now have many beautiful poems from him that I keep wrapped in a lovely ribbon. He is a very talented writer now – photographer – but I have his very young writings and they are treasures.

May I also say what a talented designer you are. I have many of your tunics (largest size possible) and bags and shoes. Of course the dusters too. I love that I get so many compliments for your designs.

Enjoy your boys – each is a treasure.

Today is my Second son’s 10th birthday! All he wanted was chocolate covered gooey caramel and pixie stix!!! So we got him his first FENDER guitar…and some candy! And told him to make a joyful noise.
Our birthday cake favorite is..THE BEST BIRTHDAY CAKE EVER..recipe from CUPCAKES! from the CUPCAKE DOCTOR. It is pretty much a cake mix with 8 oz cream cheese, 4 eggs,T vanilla, 1/2 cup each: H2O, oil and sugar.
we usually put a layer of Ice cream between the two layers of cake and then frost with butter-cream icing of choice by the Birthday boy or girl.
Thanks to Tracy’s suggestion of SLAMMIN-UP stuff..We now have a entire wall of the children’s art work. Six kids 14 and under makes for a very eclectic collection! We LOVE it. :)

I listened to the radio show last night…You are, as always a pure delight!!!….When it comes to hanging dishes, count me in,…..I have alot of old dishes of my Moms, and my Grandmothers,….grazed, chipped, the more worn the better,….I have some of them hung on a wall in a downstairs small powder room,….they are mixed in with old framed photos….it gives the room such an old world charm!!!!……About spraying your light bulbs, I do the same, but instead of spraying the actual bulb, I have round metal rings, that have a scooped out center (sort of like a well) all around the center of the metal ring,…place the ring on top of the light bulb, and pour a liquid scent in it, when the bulb heats up, it emits the scent…..I hope I described it well enough for you to visualize it…….

Hi Laura,

Happy birthday to your second son. My oldest son’s birthday is tomorrow (when he’ll officially be 17) Anyway, you know one of my favorite things is when he’s upstairs practicing guitar and singing at night. I don’t know…something about his guitar music wafting through the house just makes me glow happy.

I can’t really say the same for when my younger one practices Euphonium. Um…just that sometimes it’s not so bad.

Hi Tracy!

My pocket of inspiration occurred yesterday. I needed to go to our local book store for a birthday card for my daughter Annabelle(turning 11 on Tuesday … with an ice cream cake!). I was leaving the store when my eye was caught by the newest Jan Brett book “The Easter Egg”. Since my daughter was little, Jan Brett’s books have been our favorites. These books are sumptuous explosions of luscious color, pattern, and sweetness!! Later in the day, I sat down with the book and was inspired, not only by all the artwork, but also the wonderful feeling of spring being on my doorstep with all of it’s pleasures about to arrive.

I am also greatly inspired by another author, Gladys Taber. Maybe you’re familiar with her due to her Wisconsin connection. She lived part of her life in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her books are filled with all kinds of hominess – gardening, cooking, friends, country life – I adore them! I’ve collected quite a few of them, and they rank as some of my most cherished treasures … and a great source of inspiration to dip into again and again!

WOW…I can’t believe all these March b-days! MAUREEN…the “Happiest of Birthdays” to your son a day early. What size college is your son interested in?…area of study?..local, doesn’t matter? It can be an arduous process…I know. I love listening to my oldest son sing in the shower…he plugs in his ipod…I happen to like his choices and his voice…he doesn’t know i’m listening either…it’s really just “my” moment. I hear you on this one…so glad I have learned how to appreciate the little things! Are you having a cake?

The picture of your flower pot brought a smile to my face. I have three children (21, 17 and 9), and my eldest told me last week that I have too much CLUTTER in our home. CLUTTER… I would beg to differ!!
I have held onto all the beautiful art pieces that each of the kids has made, and keep them proudly displayed on bookcases in my living room. Drawings are framed and hanging randomly on the walls. How, I ask you, could a mother who loves her kids and their creative abilities NOT want to display such precious work??
My creative side makes cards and sends them at a whim to my kids, nieces, nephews and friends ~ I get my satisfaction in knowing that EVERYONE loves to get something fun in the mail and I’m VERY happy to put smiles on faces!
I’ll be working around the house this weekend, smiling myself as I shuffle the dust around the art that surrounds my rooms and fills my heart! xoxo

Hi Margie, I think he’d like a larger one. We visited Rice not long ago and though it’s stellar academically and offers what he wants SCIENCES and Chemistry…he didn’t like it because it was too small and touchy feely. He said it was about the size of his high school right now and he doesn’t want that. He liked the campus at A&M but doesn’t want that only because (I think)it’s where his dad went and his dad got into this big convo about algae with some engineering student there when they went (my husband is a chemical engineer in alternative fuels/green energy and algae is a big biofuel item these days) anyway my son did not like that at all. But I think BIG, is what he wants. His grades and SATs and resume are probably good enough to get him into anywhere he fancies…paying for it is another story. My brother went to Stanford so he was thinking about that seriously and I think he should apply there but he’d have to be heavily subsidized for the tuition because it’s 60K a year now and I don’t think we could stretch more than 30K tops.
Probably will have a cake but he won’t eat it. He’s Mr. Ascetic Healthbody and doesn’t eat much more than brown rice, broccoli and salmon and smoothies these days. I’m worried about him eating salmon everyday because of the mercury content. I tell him he might turn into a thermometer. He thinks I’m weird. But hey, slip a chicken breast in there once in a while, for Mom?
Good to hear from you!

She and her fiance, are getting married this June(yikes, they’re so young)he is also graduating from UofI with an aeronautical engineering degree and has a job lined up in Texas, hence why they’re moving there. May be hitting you up for suggestions later. Always apply, you never know what kind of financial pkg. may be offered. Finding the right fit is key…so they say…sometimes they learn to adapt as well. Good Luck…and a healthy eater too…i wish i could get my kids to eat salmon!! I thought the school tours were fun…at first…it will work out perfectly, I have no doubt! I left a comment on Facebook about this but figured I should probably leave it here as well! Wouldn’t want to miss out on a change to own more of your goodies!! I have a table at the end of our hallway in between all the bedrooms that stores many of the beautiful Treasures my children have made me. Along with rocks they gave me when they were really young ;) It also has each of their first pair of shoes and their first pair of overalls. I ADORE it. It makes me happy and floods my mind with memories every time I walk through our hallway and see them.

Glorious, glorious, happy Saturday everyone…Beautiful Day!!!
Heading out to enjoy this amazing morning.
Kids art and gifts are the best. I tuck drawings and paintings behind the plates and glasses in the china hutch and cupboards, I probably stuck them there to get them off the counters, but there they are many years later out of the way and not in a box. So sweet to see…
Tracy I’m guessing your b-day is in April…ttfn Helen

Cameo…good day, dear….I live in Nevada City, CA.. a quaint town above Sacramento, Ca in the mountains..I come to Carmel all the time as my parents own a place over here. I am up in Carmel Valley…lovely…I lived up here 37 years ago when my son was born! We lived on a ranch(my husband was the ranch hand)…it was awesome looking back, but I was too young to enjoy as much as I do now. Ironically, Clint Eastwood was a good family friend of my in laws best friends. They socialized with him a lot! My son’s name is Clint!!!! He is 37…Have been to his ‘Hogs Breath Inn’ place many times, but I don’t think he owns it anymore and no, I do not know him….This place is the cats meow…time to go beach walk after I frequent a walk in this little village park and enjoy the village….then off to Capitola, Ca and the Dunes at Pajaro for a four day retreat with my friend. We have known each other since we we’re 14!! lots of history there!! Hee hee..Good weekend to all…blessings and rest..xoxo

I got this idea years ago from my friend. I adorned my laundry walls for years with all of my grandchildren’s drawings, letters, etc…a few years ago I had to remove them all to redo some wall and water problems…hardest thing I ever did!! Someday I will have to put up somewhere else, but they tore, etc…LOVED IT!! It was a treasure…the best wallpaper ever! Great idea to tuck in china cabinets.

I find pockets of inspiration in the four seasons. I love when it is time for a change according to the season of the type of food we eat, the differnet outdoor activites we do and the clothes that we wear. Taking in the smell of spring these days, looking forward to spending time in the garden and my front porch.

Happy first day of Spring everyone, this is huge! To Tracy and her friends, I think you guys are all so cool. My life has changed for the better since being inspired by Tracy. For one thing, getting dressed for work in the morning is so much more fun! I used to tell my boss he should start paying me the second I start getting dressed, because “it’s work!”. Inspiration? There is just not enough time in day for everything that inspires. Sometimes I actually get anxious about it, I have to remind myself to chill. Library full time, teach college Watercolor, my art, jewelry, yoga, home, the river… Music inspires! Let me share this cool chick’s music. It’s kindda like Tracy’s designs put into music…Laura Veirs. Song- Summer is Champion “let’s get dizzy in the grass” Song- Make Something Good. My first blog ever, is it contagious? Sending my love, KJ

Good Morning Ladies!
All partied out here…Cake is gone..I did forget to tell you all that even though the recipe is for CUPCAKES, I almost always make it as a 9″round. Cupcakes are FUN but too time consuming to make!
Thank you ALL for all the Birthday wishes to Luke. He thought it was cool!
MAUREEN..Yes, hearing the music played by my husband and the boys has always been a MAJOR SOOTHER in our house. Hope your now 17 year old son had a fantastic day!
WENDYM2…I hope your son FORREST had a great day too! to answer your question, I don’t study up on signs, But Luke is my MOST active, talks non-stop, gives the biggest squeezes, and absolutely LOVES anything with numbers. Oh, and he has NEVER met a STRANGER..if only I could get him to put some of his words in writing! Now that he is 10 I hope that will change.
LISAO….JAN BRETT is one of my families favorites as well. I just found her CHRISTMAS TREASURY at the FLEA market and the kids won’t let me put it away until Christmas. My youngest son is fascinated with the TROLLS. We did not know that Jan Brett had a new release. Thanks for the tip!
Did you know SOMEONE else’s Birthday is on Tuesday? Annabelle is in good company. Good day to her too.
ANGELA and CAMEO.. My door is ALWAYS open!… (what with so many kids and all!) And there is always Plenty to eat..They don’t call me “MAMACOOKSALOT” for nothing.

Tracy:
So inspired regularly…via Facebook and your blogs. I live in Northern California, in the foothills just outside of Sacramento. No snow here, although we did have a dusting in early December! A once every 10 year event. Writing about family this early morning. My son is home from college for Spring Break and all the family and friends are headed to our house for brunch. I am “Tracy Portering a la Audrey” my house for the homecoming festivities. Once again am SO INSPIRED by the love for my family and appreciative of Tracy’s willingness to share and inspire with her genuine liquid thoughts of delight. And Tracy….I really do sing opera! Opera singers are THE most fun! But that’s a conversation for another time. Cheers!

Laura! I am so glad Luke had a wonderful day. I just love your description that he has never met a stranger – what a lovely boy! If only we could all be the open!

I went to a vernal equinox dinner party last night (my very first!) At the end of the evening, we all burned old socks as symbolic gestures and described what things we were letting go of as we go in to the new seasons. Our host is VERY creative, and he had made everyone hats or headbands signifying characters from Alice in Wonderland! It was a hoot – I was a flower, my husband was the Chesire Cat, and you should have seen the Mad Hatter’s hat! Amazing and absolutely fun!!!

Spring is in the air here in Utah, and that is always inspiring to me. New life, fresh colors, the warm sun on my face. Life renewed.

Greetings from Waterville, Ohio. My husband and I live by the seasons here on our small farm. And although we have not been blessed with children, we quietly witness an abundance of wild baby animals with great delight. With the coming of spring, we look forward to these small discoveries: baby bunnies nesting in our herb garden, raccoons filling their bellies from the fruit laden branches of our mulberry trees, and fawns bedding down on soft spring grass under a canopy of cherry blossoms. Nature, when you pause to see it, is truly wondrous.

What a magical Sunday morning it is! Snowfalls are rare here in Texas, but somehow we are managing our third of the year today! They are just barely snowflakes floating down out there, but definitely not rain. What a surprise!

Tracy, sweet birthday wishes and hugs to Gus today! I’m sure there’s an exciting buzz throughout your home this weekend. Have fun!

I was just wondering where I would find my pocket of inspiration this weekend when I happened upon a lucky find…online! I was searching for images of one thing, when I stumbled upon something completely different. Doesn’t that just about sum up browsing the internet? Anyway, I found a library of Louisiana photography that was absolutely breathtaking! So much amazing photography may be found online, and while not as good as seeing the real thing, it is inspiring nonetheless. Southern-style homes excite me to no end and a Texas photographer has posted a fabulous collection of Louisiana plantation, Garden District and French Quarter homes. To me, these are the icing on my cake! The details and colors of these homes, not to mention the dreamy courtyards, find me daydreaming of ideas to blend into my own home. And a bonus! The images are large enough, I can post a random gallery on my desktop! Inspiration every moment at my desk. Can’t beat that! If you’re curious, check it out and see if they inspire you! Cheers to a blissful Sunday!

Happy Birthday little Gus!
Tracy and Angela M, thanks for the encouragement! My painter’s pants are ready to go.
I am a magpie mama! I save just about everything my kids make. My husband surprised me with this amazing antique wooden chest for our first year of marriage. He bought it as a sort of romantic joke. Inside the chest was a single note that read “may each of our days together be the greatest treasure”. Oh have they ever…we have been married for thirteen amazing years. Each year I will put special little things in the chest and now that I have children my bounty runeth over! You will find anything from teeth to puppy Picasso’s (that is what we call children’s art). When the lid to the chest squeaks open, it is like opening a Pandora’s Box of emotions. I will laugh and cry and sometimes laugh and cry at the same time. When my daughter was diagnosed with type one diabetes, she spent many days in the hospital being poked and prodded. She was nine at the time and oh so brave…much braver than I. During her stay she drew a picture depicting her experience. An image of her is lying on a cloud surrounded by angels dressed as nurses. The border of the picture is of mommy, daddy and brother all joining hands in a circle around her. Wow, talk about making a mama’s heart jump out of her chest! Despite the uncertainty during that time, she knew everything would be just fine. My chest full of treasures has truly made my life rich in every way. XXOO

Tracy I get so much inspiration from many different places. As an artist it’s importsnt to keep your eyes open and really see. The Bible inspires me greatly when I need strength ( lately with my husband’s illness) but so do little things like the wonders of nature and your older decor videos. Oh how I miss those. You are so perfect for visual media. I hope you are able to do some of that medium soon. A TV show would be fabulous!!! Are you listening HGTV?

kids’ artwork………..you know, as my sister and I were cleaning my parents home out after their passing. Under the guest bedroom BED, I found a box. I am a 51 year old “adult~child” and in that shoe box I found 4 drawings I made in elementary school in the 60’s. Mrs. Boggs, my art teacher at Franklin Elementary School in Muskogee, OK., was magical. In that box were my abstract drawings I made as a 10 year old….ones I had often remembered and wondered if I could recreate as FRAMED ART today or on fabric. THERE they were! I am having fabric created with these 4 drawings to embellish my dining room chairs and window treatments! I AM SO EXCITED AND SO THANKful to my mother for saving them. I had no idea they even existed and had never mentioned them to anyone! MORAL TO THE STORY…..save those SPECIAL pieces in the day. Words cannot describe my JOY and SHOCK when I opened that old box……..XOXOXOX

Pocket of inspiration…..Hi all! I am back from Bora Bora, and was vastly inspired while there. In high school and college, I painted and drew portraits of children…for money or for gifts, had an art scholarship, and adored all things crafty. Well, I was fortunate to realize that to make a living as an artist, one must be supremely talented and driven. I changed majors, and continue to draw portraits for extra money or paint. A career, husband, and 3 children later…I rarely paint or draw. While in Bora Bora, I saw the work of an artist at our hotel. I politely inquired about him, having no idea of how famous he was. Well, we went to see his work. He and his wife were so humble in the midst of huge success, and he has inspired me. He started painting at 50 years old, and made me promise to pick up my paints and brushes again. While there we also visited another artist. He invited me to see his kitchen. He has taken oil pastels and completely covered the walls with the most amazing drawings. A continual work in progress. Tracy, you would definitely approve! It made me want to grab my children’s crayons and go to work…..not that brave…yet! I am inspired!! Both of these artists were amazingly humble yet proud of their work. Both were supremely talented and willing to share their knowledge and very encouraging to me. There are amazing people in this world, and I feel so blessed.

Yesterday I discovered a pocket of inspiration in watching my 67 year old mother’s love worn hands as she spoke to my niece over lunch. Just the three of us went out to celebrate my niece’s 13th birthday. I was stunned to see that my mother’s hands had become my grandmother’s hands. The arthritic crook of the first knuckles on her hands, the spots, the veins, the tendons. Those hands nursed people and family for 50 years. (Mom was a nurse’s aid at 15 and went on to be a nurse) I was in inspired by this moment to just be still and watch two of the most precious people in my life laugh and tease each other. I put that moment in my “pocket” to treasure.

there can be found remnants of JOY. If only we had a mental recorder that could play those moments over and over and over. NEVER to be ERASED with time and other circumstances.
Have a BLESSED DAY!

You ladies are all so exceptional. All the challenges you face, yet you keep the spark alive. I love your sense of humor! I really haven’t been much of a blogger, mainly just reading in the background. I guess my underlying shyness also extends online, but I did want to let you know how much I appreciate all of you!

The birthday greetings to Annabelle were much appreciated by myself, and by the birthday girl!!

Who need write more….after scrolling down the panel of delightful thoughts, images, sensual moments of memory and wisdom beaconing to be sold on a shelf….I humbled myself and relished in my moment.
The song that comes to mind that expresses where I am going…” Slow down you move to fast you got to make the morning last ya..kickin up some cobble stones..lookin for fun and feeling GROOVY..”
Carpe Diem!
I’m blessed and thank GOD for Nature amongst a million more….
