The quintessential red lip

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I figured now would be the time to write about the perfect red lip. (I have been wanting to write about this one for a while!!!)
If you are anything like me, you tend to look at magazines, covet the red lip, and then think... way too much work! I just don't think I can pull it off...
That used to me be... but truly... this look works on everyone, and is so much fun to wear!!! It can completely change your entire look... and of course, is just about as chic as can be... I'll walk you thru how to get it!
In order to achieve the look, you will definitely want a liner... the one that I'm hooked on is by MAC called burgundy. Of course, if you have a lip primer, it is helpful (but to be honest, I skip this most of the time. However, if you are in need of a good lip primer, I would go with Laura Geller's Lip Spackle... You can get it at Sephora). Once you have applied the primer (or not), line the entire lip and fill it in with the pencil. This helps create a base for your lipstick and will also help the color to last longer. (Do what works with the time you have... mind you, I am not doing all this to go to work! This is more of a "going out" thing for me.)
Then take a lip brush (this is key... your application will look much better if you apply with a brush), swipe it across your red lipstick, and begin filling in the lips. To make it last even longer, blot once you have filled in your lips the first time and then apply some more lipstick with the brush. The red that works best on me is called Dubonnet and is also by MAC.
To get your perfect color, I would actually suggest going to the makeup counter of your choice and having one of the makeup artists recommend a few colors for you. (This way, you can decide if you want a matte, sheer, or glossy finish). They also know their line better than anyone and can tell you if you need a red shade with more of a blue base or a brown base.
For touch-ups, just carry the red lipstick with you and dot it on as needed throughout the night! (Btw, if you do red lips, go a bit lighter on everything else... always a balance... you know!)
So... let me know if you decide to wear her, and if so, what are your thoughts!!!

Hi all, I want to hear how you liked the RED lipstick. I really have trouble carrying that off. I feel I am all lips. I do appreciate the application hints. Will try those with my usual color.
I have to say... I don't wear this all of the time. But, when I am going out for a cocktail, I do love to do this look (I understand the all lips comment). What I tend to do is minimize the other areas and let the lips be the focus - I think Tracy mentioned this. So, I will put on a very clean line of black eye liner - top lid only (maybe a little bronzer swept on the lids - gives them a very natural feel, but with a hint of color). As far as blush goes, I would recommend bronzer for this as well. To get the look that was right for me, I actually went to a MAC counter. I had such trouble with the look before because I never had the right shade of red for my complexion. They will not steer you wrong!!
Artist in NC...Both Tracy and Katie are right, to get the right red for you, you've got to keep it simple and most important you need to go to the make up counter and try on a few shades to get the one that is best for you. I used to be afraid of red but I have actually found one from MAC (a blue-red) that works (sorry...I can't remember the name of it. It's worn off my lipstick tube.) and one from Aloette called Garnet Sorbet. Like Tracy told us about the swimsuit (sorry Tracy...I don't know if I can be as brave as you in that department!) but be BRAVE and give your honey a BOLD Valentine this year....Red lips to kiss!!! You can do it~ :)
it is really a smashing look.....and yes!!! you can do it....let us know!
xoxo
Well Katie....I have been mulling this over, and honestly I have been wanting a red lipstick for awhile now, so this blog topic has "inspired" (there goes that word again) me to do it. I will get a red on my next trip over to Belk for a mac red. But...I hope this is not too dumb a question, but I am 49 and probably have not changed my makeup routine in years unfortunately. I typically do very light on the makeup, but do like color on my lips. ok, here's the dumb question....what is bronzer?? and is that something that would just be rediculous on a 49 year old?
Priss--I am so excited for you!!!! Ok, let me tell you about bronzer (and there are no dumb quesitions - especially when it comes to makeup!!)... first of all, it would not be rediculous on a 49 year old-I have turned my mom onto this and it looks amazing! Bronzer is what is typically used to give you more of a glow--think sunkissed. It looks very natural and works well on any skin type or age. If you want to give it a try, there are all kinds of differnet ones you can get. Now, I have to admit, I do love the one Tracy uses from Trish McEvoy.. but, you do not need to spend the $$ if you just want to see if you like it. I think I have one from jane cosmetics (I bought a while ago- at least 4 years ago--they have changed their packaging- as I was trying to find it) that had a slight shimmer in it--and I want to let you know right now, that yes, you can wear one with a slight shimmer--no need to be intimidated by this--it will look good. It esentially is used in place of blush. It will give you a very nice look - if you are headed to the mac counter, have them put one on you--see if you like it!! It would look fabulous with your new red lip!!!! xoxox,Katie
To All, I tried the RED lips. I felt very madeup. My husband noticed immediately. I told him they were wonderful to kiss, which he did. Now he may have to retire because his face is stained red!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it fades fast! We got the giggles and had a great time but I will go back to my softer natural shades and leave the drama for you girls.
I just love you even more!!! You have painted such a fabulous picture for all of us.....what a riot!
Thank you for sharing.....sounds your man is a great guy!
I have just laughed out loud, Artist! I love GREAT husbands. Last night before retiring, I heard mine call for me. I didn't answer as I was sneaking my last peak here before bed time. He walked in the study. The lights are out and only the computer is glowing. "What are you doing?" he asked. "Blogging with Tracy & gang." He just shook his head...laughing. I'm an addict.
Virginia, Am I crazy? It's the first thing I check in the morning. I used to read the paper!
I am sorry to be so graphic but I just nearly wet my pants...I am LOL!! So hard..Sarah and I are just dying ...we are litterally screaming over the wall at each other.....( you'll see "the wall" next week. ) I have things due to vicki...and I am blogging to you because I just cannot stop myself.......I am terribly distracted right now...and loving it!.....need to reach for the Self help books ....on 7 steps.....
This is the last thing I check to before bed....little glass of wine in hand, robe on...face washed...and I am on my computer to see what is going on with everyone!....cheers to you girls! BTW, did any of you watch Lipstick Jungle last night? I tivoed it...John thinks it's flat....i think i need to see it some more.....how about the really adorable guy the blond is messing around with....hmm! Also if you tivo...try to catch the Doris Duke movie coming up on HBO...looks really good....you know her right...the tobacco "reluctant" heiress (sp?).....all her fortune went to the butler....a pretty wacky number...but I have no doubt it will be interesting. ok....there is my 2 cents....must get going!! Ta-ta!!! She'll be donning the "red~lips" for sure!!!
Wonder if Doris Duke's butler ever had a red face?! Ta Ta
Wait for meeeeee......... :) Shucks! I've missed out on good blogging today I see. I've been out and about all day.....but ....Yes! I thought of my blogging buddies while I was out! And, YES! I too have to check it ONE LAST TIME before I call it a day. Tracy...you'd better get us in your therapy program soon! Ta ta for now!!!
Artist I love you and your story!!! What a fab-u-loso story! Love it!!!
Hugs ladies!
Thanks for your comment on Lipstick Jungle. Didn't see it but now my curiosity is piqued! BTW-I was thrilled to get a box from amazon.com and what do I find BUT: "Falling Cloudberries." It looks heavenly. The cover is pretty enough to eat. It'll have to tide me over till I get Tracy's catalog. :) I'm really going to try to quit...blogging for the night. Am headed for MY robe, wine, etc.
Okay, y'all....It's time for CONFESSION OF A BLOGGER! Several months ago I walked into the room and found my husband blogging with others on a boating web site. Well...having three children in the house I went into my spill about being a good role model....we don't want the kids talking to strangers, yada, yada, yada....WELL, today he walked in on ME!!!! With a smirk he said, "do you know who these people are!?!?!" Uh oh...I've been found out!
Just had to share....
To Katie,
I just got back from the Clinique makeup counter with my newly purchased bronzer!!!!!! I must say it makes the biggest difference. Girls, if you're looking for a natural glow this is the way to go. The young girl that helped me was so cute. She liked it in place of a blusher on my tawny (that's what she called it) skin. I was surprised how natural it looked. Okay Katie, what are your other secrets? Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Okay, Katie and Artist, I've never used a bronzer before. Do you use it instead of a blush? And, are there different color bronzers? I've always been afraid to dabble with bronzers because I didn't want to look "fake."
Artist! I am so happy that you got the bronzer!!! You will absolutely love it (as you already know)!! I do have a good trick for you... you can also use your bronzer for a great natural looking eyeshadow. Just make sure that you don't go too heavy-lightly dust the lid (I use my blush brush for this-gives it a litle more coverage) and it will give you a great natural look--especially when paired with a great clear/pink lip gloss (I use this a lot in summer!!). Let me know what you think if you try it! xoxo, katie
to CC, Tell your husband we are no longer strangers. Good, very good, friends!
CC - what a hoot! Like I said, we're walkin' the wild side. My hubby has laughed and said the same: do you know who these people are? I told him, I can call them my friends now. Really, a road trip will be next. About makeup: I DO like the Smashbox Primer. It almost makes your face look like it's got one of those "Oprah" screens in front of it - it diffuses the ick. Next - a bronzer! (Still no catalog but you'll hear me yodle when it comes in...) Ta, ta.
Katie, I'm having a hard time getting use to the glitter in the bronzer. I love the color in the place of blush. How can I play down the glitter? Will try the eye shadow trick!
Hi Girls! I'm so excited about all the bronzer chat!!! We will have to do an entire segment on it with video!!!! Here is the deal... CC, there are a lot of different bronzers out there with different finishes. I have both Bobbi Brown's and Trish McEvoy's right now and love them for different reasons. Bobbi Brown's is more of a matte finish bronzer - it does not have the luminocity that Trish McEvoy's does... so it depends on the look you want to go for. I would recommend going to your favorite makeup counter or boutique and literally trying a few different finishes to help you decide which is for you. Right now, I am really loving Trish McEvoy's because I need that extra shimmer (expecially with our weather!!!). Artist, regarding the shimmer... what I have done in the past is to mix a matte blush with my bronzer... this will balance out the shimmer you have in your bronzer and still look very natural. Virginia!! I am so happy you like the photo finish... have to share... I just bought another one (mine was out) and I got this great deal at Ulta. For $5 more, I got 6 smashbox eyeshadows, 1 blush, a lip gloss and mascara!!!! Can you believe it!?!? It was such a great deal! I have never tried their color products before... and I must say, I really like the eyeshadows! Keep the questions coming if you have them, and also any tricks you are using... it's so great to hear what you girls like and what products make you excited!! xoxo (and ta ta!) katie
I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to come home and read all of this chatter (as Tracy would call it!). It has really made my day!!! It's a yucky, rainy day here in Texas and I've got a bit of a sore throat....but, reading all of this with my cup of tea (in a TP Citrine collection cup of course!!!) is making it a brighter day!!!
Hugs to you sweet ladies!
Well, hello to my favorite makeup advisor (that would be you Katie...ha ha). I took the plunge and went to Mac for my red lipstick, Satin is written on the bottom....I guess that's the color, and a lip pencil in Brick. The girl picked out a couple of colors for me, and I picked the reddest. First she did the hand thing, which was fine, but oh no...then she insisted on putting me in the chair and putting the pencil and lipstick on me. Well, this was a saturday and I had my saturday look, which red lips didn't go with. I really dislike being on a chair where every tom, dick and harry walking by can gawk at you....just seems so ....??? anyway, I was praying no one I knew saw me. I know Tracy's g'mother said people aren't looking at you....well, that doesn't apply to makeup counters, because they are looking when you are sitting in a chair by the aisle! Anyway, my lips were quite red when she finished. BTW, I also bought some bronzer. Unfortunately, later that evening I'd had one extra glass of wine too many at my sister-in-law's dinner get-together, and I dropped my bronzer!! Well, it broke into a zillion pieces. The Mac folks said they'd give me another one though...wasn't that nice? Can't wait to try it all on a night out. NOw, Katie....can you or any of the TP Bloggers advise on concealer? I am blessed with dark circles under my eyes...from allergies and heredity I guess. I use Clinique concealer, but am not crazy about it. Thanks for your great advice!!
Priss,
I use everything in Clinque except concealer. I use Mary Kay. It is wonderful, comes in a pink tube and last all day.
Glad you had fun at your sister-in-law's dinner!
Ok I thought I could just read ALL of the blogs and not get involved but I can't help it. I feel I have found kindred spirits. Sometimes as a creative person it is hard to find people who understand words like "inspirational", "authentic", "lovely", "creative outlet", etc. I had told my husband that Tracy Porter is my new best friend (ha, ha) and I read some of the things Tracy said on the blog and he thought it sounded like stuff I would say. I just wanted to let you all know that it is so fun to hear people talk my language.
Welcome IM! You will love this blog. We have all become friends.
To IM, I hope you have watched the enchanted living videos. They are like talking to Tracy in your home.
I have watched all of her videos more than once. I love to be inspired and she does it for me with her "out of the box" thinking.
IM, There's a little gypsy in all of us! Order something, anything! You'll be so delighted with the quality. My next purchase is the goddess wrap to use on my dining room table. CC informs me I should do it. It has shells sewn to it and we live on the coast. What are you considering as a purchase?
Im - welcome! You'll be surprised at how alike the TP Bloggers are! And, we are now addicts to this blog. You'll need help soon. :)
Virginia email me and I will forward art pics. Did you purchase any TP today?
I have already felt like I need help because I have been checking in everyday to see what everyone else had said now I just decided to join the fun. My favorite item I own that is TP is my blue chandalier. I love it and it is so unique.
To IM, Tell us about the chandelier and how you decorate with it. We love sharing ideas.
Hi Priss! You are too kind and completely made my day!! I'm so happy you got the red lip and bronzer--how wonderful that MAC is going to replace the bronzer (we have all had that extra glass!!). It is so exciting to see all of the comments... so, onto the concealer... this has been something I too have looked for and tried several kinds. Right now, I am using Laura Mercier's Undercover--and I like it. Here's the thing--this combination has two concealers - one for the under eye and then one to cover any imperfections. I used to wear Bobbi Brown's concealer for a long time and really liked it, but wanted a change. And then I have had Laura Geller's eye spackle--which worked very well for me as an under eye concealer. Out of the three, I like the consistency of Laura Mercier's concealer the best- it is very creamy, as is Bobbi Brown's, but I like that I get 2 different concealers in one package. You do not want to apply the under eye concealer to any blemishes, as it contains oil. I find that with this concealer, I do not have to apply any powder to have it set--which I love, as powder can get into the little cracks and not help the situation! I will say that you will want to pick up a concealer brush - I grabbed one from Target--this will help you with the application. I do have some aplications tips (sorry this is so long!!!)... Take your concealer brush and apply to the corner of the eye, swipe the brush again and apply to the outer eye area and then blend the two together by simply patting with your finger. You really want to pat on concealer, not wipe it on--this will help create a very natural look! I hope this helps--if you have any other questions, of course, please ask--so happy to chat makeup!!!! IM, happy to have you with us--please do tell us about the chandelier!!
To artist, OK twist my arm and make me talk about decorating (ha, ha)......I really love to mix it up. I have my TP robins egg blue chandalier hanging above a large chunky mahogany farm table. I actually decided to paint one of my walls in the dining room the blue of the chandalier and painted 12" green and cream stripes at the top (whimsical). The chandalier is blue with green and raspberry painted flowers on it and cream glass shades and blue crystals hanging from it. I love it and have never seen anything like it. It is girly so I just have an old red and cream french linen on the table with a bowl of glass sea balls in shades of blue and green and two large cream candlesticks with blue candles. The rest of the walls in that room are an antiquey neutral tan to contrast the chandalier and my cream hutch.
...oh girls... this is too much fun! Keep up the chitter-chatter. How on earth did we make it this far with out each other? Our Blog has only existetd since OCTOBER!!!!!!! Cheers girls and welcome all to the family!...
Off to finish the book I've had my nose buried in this week - The Boleyn Inheritance (Phillipa Gregory)... Another Henry VIII (can't seem to help myself)...the orginal book - The other Boleyn Girl has been made into what looks like a spectacular film.. due out any day - have to finsish this book so I can have a clear head for the movie... Ta-Ta...
IM, It sounds wonderful. You need to read Virginia's comments in the first segment and help her with her room. She is asking for suggestions.
