At last! The Messy Bun!
Okay, girls... I know some of you've been waiting on pins & needles for this one... We shot this "behind the scenes" clip getting ready for our summer catalog shoot. Our golden goddess Robyn was kind enough to let Katie work her magic... but trust me, this really is as simple as it looks, and you can easily do it on your own! Katie does a great job walking us through here, but I thought I'd give you a little written step-by-step below as well... BTW, as Katie says, this will work if your hair is naturally curly OR straight. Honestly! But if it's stick straight like mine, you might want to use my trick with the hot rollers first for a little extra volume...
First, loop a hair band over your wrist so it's at the ready. Then, loosely rack your hair back with your fingers (we're not going for taut and slick here... this is, after all, the messy bun!!). Pull your hair partway through the hair band, stopping before the "pony tail" emerges... then double the hair band back around to hold your hair in place. This creates the "messy bun" which you can then play around with by pulling out tendrils and fluffing up other strands, etc. Voila! See, it really IS that simple!!!!

LOVE the messy bun!!!...the mistake I always made was pulling it through to a ponytail and THEN trying to double up...now I've got it...and it looks fabulous!!...Thanks Katie!!
Katie - you are TOO adorable. Now, I wanna grow my hair long. The bun looks great on both you & Robyn!
I don't even have hair that can be pulled up but I couldn't wait to see this video. :) Thanks so much for sharing this video with us.
Katie...it's so nice to see you! You too are a beauty!
Katie, how cute are you!!!!? Thanks for the messy bun, I shall wear it tonight.
Katie....please, don't forget to fill us in on the MD Forte cleanser that you like. All of you ladies (You, Robyn, and Tracy) have beautiful porcelin skin!
Katie, thanks for the video. You know, I have been doing the "messy bun" myself my whole life I think, however, I think you have the magic touch of making it look so glamorous!
I haven't tried it with the product and teasing of the hair though, I think that's the secret!
Virginia, CC, and Artist are right, you are a cutie:)
Melissa, I think you're right with the teasing and product helping the look. I too have been doing it but much too neat.I will make it looser now.
Katie, how many times did you take Robyn's hair through the band? Does that just depend on the length of the hair? Mine is the same length as Robyn's.
I'm so glad you like the video!!(and always, you girls just make my day --you are all too sweet!!!) I literally wear this style almost everyday--that's the only downside (it is so easy, that you will just not want to fuss with your hair!!)
Dawn - I'm so glad it worked for you--such an easy style--you gotta love the simplicity!!
So... CC & Virginia--how long is your hair?... I do have one trick for an messy bun-like updo that can easily be done with a handful of bobby pins... it's as simply as twisting up sections and pinning with two bobby pins and criss cross them to make an X... if you have chin length hair, you could do this style... let me know if you want more info!!
Artist - how did the bun work out?? The amount of times you pull the hair thru literally depends on how loose your hair band is. The band I used on Robyn was new, so I think I only pulled the hair thru 2times, but on a band with more give, I would pull the hair thru 3 times. You want it looser than you would put a pony tail in--and if needed, you can always secure it with two bobby pins - just tuck them into the sides and make sure they go thru the hair band!
Melissa (First, I have to tell you I love your blog!! - I was on it this weekend!!!), you are absolutely right about the racking to get more body in the roots. The best product for this (I would put this on my top 10 hair products to not live without list)is Aveda's Hair Potion. It is a little on the pricy side ($22) but will increase the thickness by 17% and it lasts a long time. I used it on all of the girls' hair at the photo shoot - it makes for a great tosseled look! The key is in the application - it is literally a powder (and don't let it freeze - I learned the hard way--it turns into a liquid!!)and you just want to hold the bottle above your head and tap the powder on your roots - very little is needed. Then use your finger tips to massage it in--and you wil have some serious volume!!
CC- no worries on the cleanser (thank you so much for the skin comment by the way - this is the product that got it there!!) I will have it for our next blog!
Thank you for all of the comments!! I must say, I really have gotten into the habbit of enjoying my glass of wine with you all at night and blogging!!!
xoxo & ta-ta!! Katie
Katie, don't forget your top 10 list!!! You promised.
Katie, I am wearing the messy bun as I type. I did find that it wants to stand away from the head and so I used 1 bobbie pin through the band. I guess this happens when your hair is heavy. To others who try the bun...that will fix it.Thank you for my summer do!
Katie - I have a chin length bob. Don't know if it's possible to get an updo; but I'll give it a shot. Just give me your tips.
oh, I will just have to run out and get a bottle of that. I just love Aveda. The salon where I get my hair done only uses Aveda products, so my hair smells soooooooo good for the next few days. I can't keep my husband away from me he loves the smell so much:)
I haven't yet tried the powder though, but now it's on my list.
Thanks ever so much for checking my blog out! The whole blogging world is somewhat new to me, but I love it. And my new blogging family too :)
You ladies are just the best! You make my day a happy one when I can come and join in on all the chatter!
Katie....my hair is pretty short. It's one that is a bit shorter in the back than it is in the front. I may need one of those "hair pieces!" HA!
I've gotta check out the Aveda product. Sounds like something I will like.
Hugs!
I haven't forgotten - no worries!!! I'll definitely have a top 10 list of beauty products to share with you for our next blog posting!
Let me know what you think about the Aveda hair potion if you give it a whirl!
xoxo & ta~ta - katie
Katie, when is the next blog posting? We are always wanting more aren't we? Just love the TP gang so much.
Hi Artist!
You know, it should go up next week sometime.... sorry to keep you hanging until then!!!
xoxo
You can't just give an addict a hit then take it away. You know you have to give them to us in doses, or we get cranky!
Hehe:)
Product Alert! Hey everyone if you need lift and volume in your hair...run out and get the Aveda potion that Katie talked about. I visited with my hairdresser today and she used this product in my hair. WOW! What a difference. Love it. Katie, thanks for sharing!
Did you guys say this product was a powder? Doesn't it make your hair (mine is dark)look dusty?
Artist and all~ It's the coolest stuff....it is a powder but when you rub it in is dissolves. My hairdresser told me to use the hair dryer after putting into your hair to set it. BTW..you put it on dry hair.
Katie, can you use it on wet hair?
Hi Ladies...Sounds like you all are having a party here every day..What Fun!! I have to comment on Aveda's Hair Potion. Katie used it on my hair during the photo shoot, it is amazing stuff. I really needed it...
FYI - I did the messy bun today, Katie style. Thought of you all and smiled as I did it this morning. Hope you all had a great day!
Hi CC & All!
You can use on damp hair as well... although for me, I find that it really works best on my hair when it is dry. This stuff is seriously awesome!! Here's how I use it - I will actually use it right at the end of my styling instead of using it with the hairdryer - for whatever reason it works well for me this way. I lift up at the roots and then sprinkle a little directly on the root--I do this just on the top. Then I take my fingers and mess up the roots to help build the volume! For a finishing touch, I'll use Aveda's Pure Abundance Hair Spray, but instead of spraying it right on the hair, I spary 3 squirts in my hands - rub them together and then apply to my roots by lifting the back of my hair up and working in the product--makes for a more natural look and it holds all day!!! Sorry I am so long winded!! This truly is an awesome product for anyone who wants more body, but doesnt want a lot of to-do!
Katie, Please apply the powder and spray on your hair( as you explained above )on a video. We need to see you do it.
Artist - I dunno why, but your comment made me laugh. Poor Katie! You've proven so accomodating so now we NEED to see you in action. I will be purchasing the "magic hair potion" this weekend! Here's to wacky, wonderful weekends with good hair!
Katie,
You are truly a good sport! I just cannot wait for your Top 10!! I also loved the video, and especially your giggle at the end. I had to think...you must be a giggler. :O) I got a big kick out of that....you all must have a lot of fun at the office. Laughter is so good for the soul...don't you all agree??
Y'all if you're looking for volume....this is the product you must try. It's awesome! I've used it for a few days...both with and without the hair dryer. Like Katie said, it works just fine without the heat. I think I like that better just because it save a bit of time. I've used it like Katie described above again....it's great. You can also "re-puff" it during the day. Seriously, give it a try....I think you'll be hooked! :)
Priss, It's good to know you are still alive. Where have you been? Did you ever get your paint color problem solved? Hope all is well.
Priss: a day without laughter is NOT my kind of day. And I LOVED Katie's giggle too. My grandmother's mantra was that one had to have love, laughter and chocolate. Wise woman, wouldn't you agree?
Priss, it is so good to have you back with us!! Yes, I will be the first to admit, I am indeed a giggler!! And an absolute yes to the laughter... always good to not take yourself too seriously and to have fun with everything you do!!! Virginia/Artist--I'm jotting down the idea for the video and Virginia, you must let us know what you think if you picked up the product!
Katie, thanks for taking all the time for the videos. Can't wait for more.
Artist and all...thanks for sweet comments....my mom is not well. she broke her ankle and can't walk on it for 6 months. my siblings and I have been taking turns with her care, and now she's in the hosp. with a kidney infection. So...between work, family, and other commitments (aka LIFE) I've been busy. Artist...I did go to Melissa's site (thanks Melissa!) and print off the striping instructions. But, I am nervous about it...her stripes are very straight!! Were you able to find the HOme Comp. (Aug/Sept 06) with the purple DR on the cover & pg. 54? I have not had a chance to get to the paint store yet. will look up your colors. Thanks so much all! Katie...I can hear you giggling now!
Must say I am jealous of everyone who can try the 'messy bun'...alas I have short hair so no go. I wish Katie could get ahold of my hair though....I think I might end up looking like a rock star (or a rock star's mother)...
to Priss, We all wish Katie could get ahold of us. Do I hear complete makeover?! Sorry to hear about your mom, speedy recovery wishes. Don't let the straight stripes scare you. Get a level (the ruler with a bubble in it). It will make it so easy and fast. We're here to help!
Katie - still no Potion for this head. I'm having difficulty finding Aveda products - in Houston! But, as soon as I do, you'll know about it! Keep on giggling girls! Ta-ta...
Priss, Here's wishing your mom feels better and is out of the hospital soon. How blessed that you have your siblings to help you in caring for your mother.
BTW....Go with ROCK STAR!!!! :) I like the way that sounds much better!!!
Sorry ladies, feel like I have been out of the loop for a while.
Priss, I prayed for your mother. Please let us know how she is doing. Also, I agree with artist. You're stripes can be straight do! A level is a decorating girls best friend:)
Katie, on a different not, have you ever tried Bare Minerals make up? I was curious as to what you thought.
Tracy Darlin' Come back to us.. Your Friends & Fans Await...
Where are you ???
Last post ( which we loved was Feb. 28) We miss you .. Are you ok?
Also,
Indgo Paint color pretty, pretty pleaseeeeeee
oh, this is truly a slumber party down here....really!! You know when we do our photo shoots it is sort of that feeling....we just are not having wine...( not that we wouldn't love to) I am just afraid we wouldn't be able to think straight! Ok, all the hair talk.I'll be honest.........No time for washing it today so....I went with slicked backed in a pony...messy bun in the back......great thing is.....even works on bad hair days when your hair is like mine stick straight ( i was definitely not blessed with good hair)you do this...add a little extra liner on the top lid....a big gold cuff on the ring and a sparkly bauble on the right hand....shhh, only you know. xoxo
Jeanna Darling, You can't pose as anon when you use those precious adjectives that only you do so well.LOL
We all agree with her though, Tracy where are you?
Tracy, you have such a true natural beauty....you would look wonderful in sack cloth my friend! :)
cc....I love you EVEN more.
xo
Hi girls!
I must say.. I have not tried the bare minerals because of the packaging... I do a lot of traveling on the weekends and for packing purposes all of the little pots make me nervous (I'm worried I'm would not be gentle enough)... more of the throw everything in a bag and hope I don't forget anything type... I know a lot of people who wear their products and they always look fantastic--I'm just one of those who would worry I'd break it and then have minerals everywhere but my face!! Of course it could all just be me and I might have absolutely nothing to worry about.... how do they work for you?
Wow Melissa...thank you ssooo much for your prayer for my mom. That touched me so much. Here's a big hug for ya XOXOXO !!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! I've been trying to do a messy bun for sometime now and up until I saw your video and blog this morning, I've been unsuccessful. So, I am PROUDLY wearing my messy bun to work today! I always started with a ponytail and it just never worked right. Thanks SO much!
