Reinvent your photo wall

As you may know, we've been turning our house upside-down, prepping for our summer photo shoot... I blogged a little bit about this topic before, tempting and teasing you mercilessly, I realize! You've all been so patient...... So, here she is!!!

One of my absolute favorite vignettes is our new photo wall! (If you'll recall from past videos, this wall used to be a shade of pale celadon green with gobs of black and white photos on it.) To change the feel entirely, we chose the most sumptuous shade of indigo... then stenciled on a tone-on-tone Moroccan pattern... and then topped it off with touches of metallic gold. Simply stunning! But you know me, I couldn't stop there! Over all of that deliciousness, I've layered gorgeous huntress elements... everything from resin antlers and a majestic stag, to our notable relics and petite aged mirrors. As a finishing touch, I chose some of our most cherished favorite family photos to toss in here & there. Tres magnifique! (BTW, if you look closely, you'll see my formerly white banister also received several coats of jet black lacquer, and a fabulous set of antique foo dogs now graces the columns! Oh, and the Chinese red doors in the background... They're far too good... More on those soon!!!) I absolutely adore my new space... I always say, our home is a labor of love, ever evolving, never quite finished... That's the beauty of it, for me anyway... I hope you're inspired to reinvent a wall, or a nook, or an entire room, in your own home!

xoxo,
Tracy

Oh my gosh,.. I'm your first comment,.. ok first off I love the indigo, huntress wall! Awesome idea for all of us "hunting wifes" and the endless amount of antlers we get here in Wisconsin! What a fantastic wall!! I love the sexy indigo with gold accents! You go girls! I get "antsey" myself this time of the year! I've recently layered Spanish moss everywhere in my home,(in vintage jars, glass candleholders, you name it!) in hopes for spring!! Okay, my favorites rings... Lavish and Luscious and Fragments of Beauty! (for starters) I love wearing cocktails rings! They make me feel so "sassy!" And I have to write that I literally DREAM about Off to Paris, Leopard Vixen, and Honeysuckle Rose!! I am a bag freak! Anything with red, black, animal print, turquoise,... okay anything bold and fun,.. I LOVE!! So I'm offically "blog hooked" ladies! You'll be hearing more from me! Have a great weekend everyone! ;)

Oh Tracy, you must share the paint colors you used in indigo blue. That wall is wonderful. Did you create a stencil or go freehand or buy one from where? Also I am really waiting to see about the red doors! Will the foo dogs be in your next catalog or are they antique. All of it is wonderful. Thankyou!!!

Tracy, your decorating is inspirational. You have a beautiful house but really your ideas can be used in any size or style of house. People just need to be creative with what they have it's not always about bigger and better. I love your outlook on life.

Hi Tracy, Silly question but....What keeps the Foo Dog from falling off the newell post of your steps? I LOVE him there! I'd love to do that in my home but can't figure out how to make him (or any other piece) stay. Was it just for the photo shoot or do you have a secret? Please share.

Hey, anyone out there read "O?" Oprah's mag?? I pick it up once in a while. Well, here WE are!!! A key to happiness: REARRANGING. And I quote: "One of the keys to a home that elicits a lot of happiness and positive emotion is that it changes to some extent." "...but if you get the bug (TRACY!!!!) to move things around a bit or play with the lighting, you might find your own interior gets a lift toward the sunnier." Isn't that cool? And, doesn't it affirm Tracy's adage here?? I know that I have fluffed, changed away this past week. And, I AM soaring! Ta-ta...

Hi There!
So glad you guys like the wall. I am definetly going to show you a video on the shelves near by, no worry! The foo dogs are not actually antiques, they are antique inspired, and really insanely beautiful....may go in the holiday book....not sure yet. they are screwed and glued onto the posts....! If they are on there in a year I will be amazed...our boys fly down those steps like there is a candy buffet waiting at the bottom. So wish me luck....I just needed something delicious there....a dark red oriental runner with brass bars is going on the steps in a few weeks, I'll share with you once it's in. I know it will add yet another layer.I may just move permanently into this section of our house. It's my new favorite spot....oddly. Yes, the stencil was created by one of the fabulous girls in the studio....then layered with touches of gold. I am so glad you liked the voices in the background...it was during the photo shoot....thank goodness you are fine with the chaos of our world seeping into yours....again I LOVE you for this! Most certainly you heard Gus as he is a constant chatter~box! Lots of new sentances...and screaming MOM, MOM, MOM...nearly non`stop at the top of his lungs even if he is on my lap. ......hey Virginina , give that darling man of your a kiss from all of us!

Oh wow, I feel as if I have missed so much. It's been busy here in Memphis.
Tracy, the girls are so right. You do know how to make a house feel like a home. I think, from what I can tell, it's b/c you don't focus at all on the "rules" of decorating, so much as on what makes your (and your family's) heart sing. I think that is why we are all drawn to you and your products. It seeps through in all you do.
After all, that's really what life is about isn't it.
Please tell whoever designed the stencil for you, Good Job!

Melissa, as an artist I was thinking the same thing. That stencil is wonderful and has a hand painted look which many don't. The not too perfect perfection.

Tracy, I remember in December you mentioned how you love those "tissue T-shirts" for layering. It looks like what you're wearing in your foyer is a wonderful, comfortable THIN T. Can you share the brand? Or your favorite? It'd be perfect for Texan winters...thank you! Ta-ta...

March 03, 2008

....boy you girls are on it...you don't miss a thing! .....and for that I am grateful.....the foyer is all redone, "just" redone that is.I will share soon, yes, luscious flocked wallpaper ( with black laquer) ( video, video...I know..and I agree...I need to hang some stuff on the walls first)....I have this crazy love of flocked and metallic wallcoverings....and the shirt...ohhhhhhhh, the shirt.....will be in our summer catalog...it is unbeleivable, think shopping in Paris, found a vintage pucci. So amazing...the colors...oh...and fits so well.......
and yes, Melissa...rules, schmules...imperfection is bliss!!! ( and so much less stressful)....I am of the belief that in ones home you must just do what inspires you.... make it comfortable , inviting and more than anything personal.....I know you know.

I with you on the London walls. I'm an anglophile and love how the English (at least the upper crust) fill up their walls with pictures, etc. It's a much cozier feel and look. The English seem to not have to have their homes so perfect. I look at British decor magazines and they're far more "real" than say, the homes featured in American decor mags, that seem much more for show and where nothing is EVER even off center.

One of my favorite walls I have covered in the Tottering By Gently cartoons you see in Country Life (British) magazine. I buy the books, tear out the prints and put them in matching black frames and fill up the wall. Colorful, cozy and makes me feel like I'm in a country house in England. LOVE IT! :)

Yes, we are adopting a 3 year old little girl from China...we have 3 boys (14, 13, 10) and knew a little girl would complete our family...Currently the wait time for age 0-2 years is at about 3 1/2 years, we have chosen a child off what is called a "waiting child" list, hence why she is already 3... We are expecting to travel to China in late May to June to get her...We are so thrilled and cannot wait to have her in our arms...You can follow our journey at www.ourlittlechinagirl.blogspot.com

Tracy, do you mind sharing with us how you choose which items go to Target (or other discount stores), Horchow, Neimann's and which items remain in your personal collection? I'm just curious. It seems like a HUGE undertaking and one must be incredibly organized. I have always thought that your company was a major corporation but it sounds like you have a small number of people employed? Is that right???

CC & Artist, couldn't agree more about the stencil. You are right on!

Jeanna, I am so jealous you are gonna get to go to an actual Tracy Porter store. Oh, I am green with envy.

Dawn, read your blog as well. I have some good friends who have adopted from China, twice. A little girl, Sophie, and most recently and 8 year old albino boy, Tian Garrett Cross. They are both such blessings. It was amazing to witness their Homecomings at the airport and see how God really did create each one specifically for that family.

My husband and I will most likely adopt one day. Not sure if it will be international or domestic, but I know that their is a child out there somewhere that needs our loving. We'll all just have to wait on his timing.

Yes, the stncil is a good idea...I will think on it, thanks as always for asking, sometimes we use old wallpaper as a stamp to create a stencil /aged ffel. Use an antique looking flocked type paper, or a lincrusta.....again, another good video idea I supose.
JEANNA*** I have e-mailed you 2 times on your letter but i must have your address wrong, would you mind terribly calling our custoemr service and giving them your e-mail address for me. Thanks!! 1-866-388-7229. I went into blogger and read your ADORABLE profile..so cute!
So, CC good question on Target. Here's what we do. For most retailers we design what we call a " mian line" this allows them to choose froma range of patterns, but they don't get the exclusively. With Target we do everything exclusively. We show them a range of patterns and they are the only store that gets to carry those. We try to design the most beautiful things for all the retailers well sell to, each company has a bit of a differant customer base so someone like Neimans may choose somethiing from our collections based on their percieved custoemr base. I hope his makes sense.....we are very fortunate to have these wonderful retailers carrying our brand...we know it lets us reach so many differant people. I do think of us as a small company. We just happen to be super scrappy...seems like bootstrapping is just in our blood! So it may allow to seem bigger. We try to outsource anything that we don't need to do ourselves, trying to grow in a smart way...ever learning....and really growing every year. We have never enjoyed our buissness more .

Hi Tracy ,
Would you please give us some decorating tips on adding your style of beautiful colorful decorative items into our homes? My entire house has been the soft celdon sage, buttercream walls with white trim, window frames and doors. I want to add and more color like your indigo wall but just don't know how to start. Would I just paint one wall (indigo) leaving the rest celdon? If so, where would your colors plates, pots etc., go? On the color wall or across the room onto the sage?
As you can hear in my typing I am frustrated yet very willing and excited to make changes. I want to shop your catologs but I don't know how to tie the color pieces in and what colors to paint walls which could help. Please advise..I know there are a lot of all white, buttercreams and celdon sage people out there with the same delimas

Hi My Friends!!!
Boy....ok, lots to catch up on! I am always excited to see new lovely people join in!! Thank you for discovering us and for speaking up...I love you all for it!!
* the springtime video question, so sorry we don't have those items anymore....I apologize when things are in the videos then they sell out, I hope it is still inspiring to see those even if the products are now gone. If it's only related to a specific item I will pull those down, but if I think it's inspiring...I will generally keep those up.
* another great question was how to add more color. You know...I LOVE color...I find it to be one of the most inspiring elements in design and in life. I find when I paint a room a new color it literally changes the mood entirely and changes my view of it. I would suggest you go BOLD with color. Be brave, explore....life is too short to not enjoy gorgeous succulent colors on your walls!!!Listen, it's paint....and while not free...we are not talking gemstones. If you are willing to experiment, and allow yourself the freedom to just go with what inspires you....then I am certain you'll amaze yourself with your new found passion! I am hoping you'll find an entirely new point of view from this. Start in a smaller space, perhaps a powder room, or foyer...go with a color that just makes you wild...but that you think....oh, but I can't....then DO!!! It's the only way to become brave with color....you just need to find some
juicy colors that make you squirrely. Either from your closet...or a tear sheet, or nature or go to the hardware store and look at color chips( this is not nearly as inspiring but...do what works for you!!!). I wish I were able to offer you my colors but I generally have them custom mixed at our local hardware stores( mostly I will send along a fabric swatch or anything that I love, a shirt...you name it....just try not to feel limited ....then let all of us know!!
More to share........I have been wildly inspired over the last few weeks...we are working on so many cool things. I now understand why people do yoga......I just have non stop wild energy flying through my body...my brain is in over drive! This is what happens to me when I am inspired...and really it's the catalog, the website all the new stuff we are designing that is making me so entirely reeling with energy! I love this feeling...but honestly I get up at 5~ just so I can exercise and let out some energy....sometimes a seriously sweaty work out is all I need.
I am thrilled that you like what we do...it's too much fun. Sarah and I had a chat this morning about it and how much harder it makes us want to work when we see your passion for our work is as good as it is.....thank you, thank you........ok, I need to fly..good to chat w/ you for a moment.

Hi Melissa, I just received my filigree locket today. It is a beautiful statement piece. I am wearing it right now. The pearls are a wonderful color. My daughter has REAL pearls and these are the same color. The clasp is so chic and I love the size. Part of the delight was the packaging. Gold box with pink grosgrain ribbon tied with a TP card. Just beautiful. This is the type piece that will never go out of style. i shall be wearing it in my old age! Thanks so much for asking.

I can't be gone a whole day anymore, I just miss too much. Virginia, Artist and CC...I know when I come back to Tracyville, you ladies will always make me laugh.

Tracy, I COULD AGREE WITH YOU MORE on the topic of painting and color choice. That's is our philosophy at OFF THE WALL, "it's just paint!" Life is to short to try to fit in to all the decor rules, just do what you love.

Also, I have been a huge yoga girl for years. LOVE IT! I recently started pilates. Have you tried that. Oh, it'a amazing.

I am on the edge of my seat for the new video's. YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh... I am so sorry....I meant tomorrow thinking it was Thursday yesterday... ( you can boooo....) good lord woman get your days straight b/4 you open your mouth....and now all those cheerleader's moves going on....FRIDAY.....I am sorry to throw that one out there. BTW....I am so thrilled AMY, shared with me when I blog through firefox there is "spell check"....OH GLORY!!! Happy days...as you know I am really a bad speller..try as I might...I adore spell check!! ( now lets hope I get all my grammar right!! John, is a crazy grammar hammer...I do what I can)
Yes, Easter....it's just coming so darn fast...we do it at our house all John's and my family ( that can get here) come. We have an absolute blast!) I don't have a video for you, and to be honest I don't think I am going to video that day...but I will share with you ( thanks for asking) We do a cool appetizer grazing...from about 3:00 on....everyone brings goodies....which is wonderful...we have cocktails and a fabulous egg hunt on our property ,the "big" bunny comes pulling an old vintage cart full of goodies for the kids....then they all come in and look for an easter basket...about 14 kids...too much fun!! I also do a "grownups" easter basket...this is really something to consider....John hides a golden egg
and each person hunts for it...the finder gets a fantastic basket filled with all kinds of treats and goodies ..you name it...lots of it is stuff we have designed, I usually add some primroses or potted tulips, depending on what available.....I'm not sure who has more fun...the kids or the adults.......we do our celebration on Saturday eve. We have for years, since so many family members are coming from Chicago.....Please share what you do....I love hearing your ideas......More than anything...I cherish the time...anytime I get to spend with our family all together, watching the cousins have a blast...catching up with everyone. We try to keep it all laid back and fun....the appetizers are great...so John and I are not stuck cooking the entire time!!

Tracy, I for one am very disappointed that we have to wait another day!!! It's just not fair. Do you hear me stamping my feet? And now CC has to wear that cheerleader uniform one more day. Please reconsider!!!!!!!!!!!

Tracy, your Easter sounds like such fun. Ours is much the same , lots of family and food, except it all takes place on Sunday after Church. Being Christian, this is a very important day in our Church. It is also an important family day, my mother who is 84 years young still cooks for all of us at home in her garden(which she also still tends). I think if I were at your celebration I would tackle a few people to get that golden egg!!!!
