Five minute bookshelves

Again with the teasing! Yes, we've got more behind-the-scenes footage from our summer catalog shoot... with Gus chattering in the background, photographers scurrying about, prepping for the next shot... Just adds to the lovely chaos of it all! (p.s. Many of you have been asking about the lipstick red doors... so we just had to give you another peek! We've added a few more coats since we shot this video, and they are absolutely luscious and mouthwatering now! But I digress......)

So, these bookshelves! Rough hewn cedar, gobs of old books (John collects the works of Elbert Hubbard, one of the influential architects of the arts & crafts movement... I love them here in the mix), and other little tchotchkes tossed in here and there... I love that they're all a little haphazard and disheveled looking... heart-warming and inspiring... Such a perfect way to dress up a hallway or a mudroom... and gain added storage space to boot! I am so enamored with this look... I definitely need to find a few more nooks that I can transform in my home!

Tracy - I am such a book fiend, this really appeals to me. I'm all over the disheveled look. Once you called it "European." I think I prefer to call my self worldly instead of a mess. :) Thanks as always...loved these videos! Ta-ta.

Love the shelf and the painted velvet. I have to tell you about a nook I transformed. I have a hallway in my lower level (finished basement) any way I put 2 black bookshelves from world market there filled with books I put a red faux leather club chair in the corner and I call it my "hallway library". Its fun to walk thru to get to our family room where the kids play wii, and air hockey. Places that you walk by every day are the perfect place to transform. Thanks for the inspiration.

Im - first I noticed on another previous post that you signed "Lm". So will the real you stand up? Do we type a capital i or a capital l? Ok - back to your hall. Fabulous visual. Love that idea!!!! I can never have too many books around...(Virginia)

Love all the videos Tracy! I have a shelf like this over the doorway in my pantry, holding all my cookbooks. Hadn't thought about it in this way though....love the disheveled look. Gus is precious! I'd just love to squeeze him!

Virginia-It's LM but when in lower case it looks like an i. Thanks for asking though. My daughter thinks it's dangerous to blog. I tell her my friends in Tracyville are harmless like me but she said other people can find out where you live. Is this true? Am I living on the edge? And if I did want to contact anyone, how does that happen? I'm a beginner and confused.

To Melissa, the shelf was the easiest trick yet. I found a wonderful one already made with a lovely
pediment at a local flea market quite by accident. It had 2 rings on the back for hanging. I hit a stud in the wall for strength and BINGO it was up. Filling it was fun. I didn't use all books. I mixed them with artwork etc...

To LM, you're among friends. Do not give out your address or phone number. We speak so generally here that it's harmless. I did give an email previously, it was already public due to my art business. We enjoy talking to you, don't get scared and leave.

Now I'm off to find velvet drapes with an old patina. Love the flea markets!!!

Wow!! Artist, you are awesome! That was fast! Way to go! ( you guys if you do want to do this it is super easy...lickety split) If you use an "L" bracket it will make it very easy. The books are the saving grace as they cover up the brackets anyway.
I know I said this on the video( i think i did)...but it makes this tiny spot feel so delicious...I want to pull up a chair and read right there. You can make this so personal, create a story ...if you will....on your shelf.....since many of those books on mine are my husband John antiques I love it more. Priss I love that all of your cookbooks are on yours, and LM your space sounds so cool....i just adore hearing all the stuff you are doing..........thanks for sharing!!

Tracy, do you repaint and change the house for every catalog? Would that be 4 times a year? Would love to hear about this.

Yes, I would love to hear more about this too. Do you find that your rooms are getting smaller? You know, due to the many layers of paint...hehe.

LM, I guess that given the world we live in today, we do need to be sure we have our guards up and are cautious. However, given the way the blog world works, my email address is wide open for all to see. Plus, I have a great feeling about the ladies here in Tracy Porter Land:) No harm to be found here sister!

Tracy, I think I am going to attempt to incorporate this shelf in my home office this weekend. It's perfect! However, I do have one concern. My husband and I have a smaller "starter" home and our ceilings in the rooms are only 8 feet tall. Do you feel that this space is not tall enough for a shelf as such?

Tracy by now you must be home enjoying your runner up the stairs. Would love to see pictures. Why don't you just move into that wonderful little spot in your home? It is so inviting.

Dawn, Tracy did use plate hangers to hang her books. Just open the book up and stretch it across the back. There's a good picture of this beside one of the beds, not sure which one. Hope this helps.

Hi Priss, Hope your mom is feeling better. Yes spring has finally arrived in the Carolinas. The yellow pollen is attacking our air and my allergies. I don't mind, it's beautiful. Have you painted yet? BTW I am wearing my messy bun today!!!

Tracy, I am still waiting to hear about how often you change the house. I mean major like you are doing now. Does each catalog require a renovation? This is very interesting. Please reply.

Hi artist...thanks, my mom is better..she is supposed to get out of the hosp. tomorrow. (Thanks so much for asking) I plan to try to paint next week, but this all depends, since I am still helping with my mom (she has a fixator on her leg, and can't walk). Yep, the pollen is horrendous that's for sure. I guess we have to take the bad with the good. Wish I could try the messy bun! But, I do love short hair. Ta Ta

No we don't do top to bottom changes often. But what you are seeing , these kinds of things are pretty regular for us. Most of the ideas come from my own wants to add layers to the house, they happen to make fantastic backdrops for the photos shots. I figure we are going to pay to rent a fabulous photo site , or....we can just keep adding to and reinventing our own home. Since i love the changes and layers so much...it all sort of works out. Rather spend the time/$ making our home more interesting.
Priss, glad your mom is well. hope she does get out of the hospital...just in time for Easter!
Yes, the birds are singing, Robins in the yard....we went for a good 2 hour walk this weekend, while still chilly...just luscious to hear all the chatter of the birds and all the good earthy smells!!
YUM!!!!!

Oh, no. Another book/magazine to add to my list. My library is getting quite extensive since joining Tracyville. The really quirky thing is how Artist and I have almost the exact same titles -whether fiction or design books!!! Spooky...

TIP: This a totally-off-the wall tip (literally). There is a pose/exercise you can do for a minimum of 5 minutes and feel you've taken a 30 min. nap!!! It's called "legs up the wall" pose. Google that and read about the results! A gal in Pilates (former Yoga teacher) told us of a 70 yr. old woman that looked far younger after doing this pose for years! So, at around 3:30 you can catch me with my legs up my wall. My men think I'm nuts; but it is invigorating. Try it & let me know what you think!

Thanks Trace, I'll have to check that out. Just another magazine to add to my addiction:)

Oh, btw, does anyone ever call you Trace? I apologize if not...I'm known for shorting the names of people I talk often with:)

My close friends usually call me Mel. Maybe it's a southern thing!

Virginia, that sounds hilarious...but I truly am going to check it out and give it a try. I absolutely love naps, so if it can give that rested feeling, I have to try it.

*I do not do yoga; BUT everyone can benefit from this one! I think Tracy does yoga...she probably can clue us in.

No I don't do yoga but I should.....I do the elliptical instead and bowflex. I have a dear friend that does a lot of yoga....I may need to do it someday....I do stretch alot....not that it has a yoga effect.

I never woulda thought that blogging in Tracyville would lead to my legs on the wall. Well, it did...today! Virginia, I printed the article and tried it today, and you are right. It was quite relaxing, so I definitely plan to keep it up. I was surprised.
Sadly, I can't do the 3:30 club though because I am at work then! Thanks for sharing this!

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one with my derriere to the baseboards the other day gals!
Been busy constructing our new front hall library as inspired by the TP Blog...wall-to-wall shelves, new paint, centre hall table for more stacks of books, the souveniers of nature we seem to collect daily (that used to be scattered all over the place) and massive bouquets of Russian sage, black-eyed susans, Chinese lanterns, curly willow....Oh, I'm dreaming again - we'll have to wait for the flowers here. Thank you TP Blog! (Artist, I'm envying you and your time in the garden!)

Tracy, I bought your 'Dreams From Home' the other day. Your Grandmother seems to have been a tremendous influence on your life and designs...LOVED the story of the peacock!
I'm wondering about the 'flora and fauna' at your home now. What animals/birds are you raising at the moment? Also, you mention seed catalogs today. What are some of your favourite things to grow? Will you be trying anything new this year?

Stephanie, where did you say you were from? Is it still cold? It seems you are playing inside. Friends loved the books over the door, bet you will too. Have fun doing it. Where did you find Dreams of Home? I haven't been able to find it, think it's out of print. Thanks!

Stephanie - here's to derrieres around the world against baseboards! :) I'm late for that - gotta get in place. The gardeners of Tracyville are helping this novice gardener get motivated. Altho' my fave color is green; my thumb is not.

Artist, I am in southern Ontario, Canada and it is snowing huge flakes as I type (rather unusual this late in March)! So yes, I have been playing inside and am THRILLED with the results.
The book actually arrived by mail a few days ago. I purchased it on-line through Amazon and it has been an absolute pleasure to read! It is very personal and filled with beautiful inspiration...you will love it I'm sure. (wonderful Easter basket on page 91...parties, recipes too)
Enjoy your lovely hydrangeas!
