Chinoiserie powder room
The tour continues! So, right... several of you have been asking about our master bathroom... The walls before? A pale shade of blue... The walls now? Covered in gorgeous, heady hues of emerald green!!! l am ever telling you that I find paint color inspiration in every nook and cranny... this emerald green is inspired by a shirt I own... I love the intense rich feel of it! With (yes) more black lacquer trim, wainscoting, and doors. Quite the striking contrast... but oh how divine!! It's not an overly large space, but after flooding the walls with this rich, dark color... it oddly feels more spacious AND cozy, all at the same time!
The embossed gold details on the walls are actually piped (yes, out of a pastry bag) with plaster and then, once dry, rubbed with metallic gold and aged with a dry brush in dark brown paint. Don't be intimidated! We did ours free-hand... but you could easily get a similar effect using a stencil. Even the sconce shades got a face-lift with scraps of burlap fabric, some paper cutouts, and headbands painted in high gloss red lacquer for added texture. Just hot glue everything in place, and voila!!
I admit, the pièce de résistance is the mouthwatering tile border... Each tile is over-the-top, luscious goodness... I love staring at them, seeing how the light catches each of the tiles differently... Some are ceramic, others are wood with a mix of found objects (think inexpensive costume jewelry, placemats that were cut apart, etc) glued onto them for texture and interest. (It's amazing what you can re-purpose when you visit the dollar store, craft store, or thrift store... A bit of gold leafing or some high gloss lacquer works wonders!! Are you with me???)
We also used glass tiles with color copies, old postcards, or hand-painted artwork collaged and decoupaged beneath them. The end result is eclectic... and breathtaking! (Hint: Rather than doing individual tile work for the final installation, we decided to mount our tiles on a wood backing first and then put them up in several sections along the top of the wainscoting.)
If you don't have a powder room, foyer, or hallway in need of a major overhaul like this... why not create a beautiful tiled mirror instead? Or cover the top of a small accent table? Or revamp the top of your headboard with a row of unique and interesting tiles?? Even a single hand-made tile (or small grouping of them) would make a lovely addition to a "London Wall" (just display with a piece of ribbon or inexpensive plate hanger). I'd love to hear some of your creative ideas!!!

Oh Tracy, I had been waiting for this video and was not disappointed!!! That border is too delicous. I like the idea of putting the tiles etc. on a board and then on the wall. Years later when you make a change you will be so glad you did. The artist in me is ready to begin my own border, I just don't know where. The search is on!!! LOL Thanks for the tour. BTW, I was sorry we missed seeing whatever you did over the top of the mirrors. Could you tell me about that? xoxo
Tracy, I love that your inspiration for the wall color came from a shirt that you own. How clever! I'm definitely drawn to certain colors that show up in my wardrobe, so it makes sense to decorate with colors that truly inspire you. I did wonder... how involved is John in the decorating process of your home? Does he have a lot of ideas and input or does he just let you go for it? You have such creative ideas. And like Dianne, I too wondered about what was on the top of the mirrors.
I know that you work with such creative minds, its evident in your products and design. Would you ever consider doing a design/art workshop for women?
Tracy,
what is the exact date of the store opening? Is it before or after mothers day? I told my husband that is what I want for my gift is to go to the new store and to go to Georgies.
Tracy, I also want to see if you changed the window that had the tea towels ( you showed us previously). What's there now?
xoxo
The store is tentatively opening mid may. no exact date , I will see where Roby is on this and get back to you. Georgie's is open, and always looks fabulous and inspiring, that is Robyn's store in Princeton!
Above the mirrors in the bathroom is a patterned cut out that is gold leafed then attached to the wall with upholstery tacks. It has a wood moulding framing it at the top.
Yes, we did change the windows as well, a set of hand painted silk curtains, simple elegant, in a golden color.
Maybe at some point a workshop...you are so sweet to ask. I have considered something like it...no plans for now. thanks for asking!!
xo
Tracy,
You know every post you do inspires me to add more of this beautiful Asian flair into my home. You are really helping me to see how wonderful it can look and be that reminder of our daughter's birthplace. I am soo addicted!!
Dawn, when is your little girl coming? Let us all know so we can be praying for you and your family.
Dianne~
Thank you so much for offering up your prayers for our family. We are hoping no later than July, so that is a prayer request...that our final approval and travel approval come quickly.
xoxo
Dawn
Dawn, I have no doubt with this group you are in all of our thoughts....we cannot wait for your wonderful journey! sooooon!!!
xoxo
Okay this emerald color is to die for! I'm so doing this! Thanks for the inspiration,...again ;)
OK Jeanna, what are you going to paint emerald? I want to do the border somewhere...still looking for a place.
Well,.. Artist technically I can't do this in my home. We live in a duplex :( BUT,.. I'm helping my parents redo the upstairs of their house,.. and I could sooo do this in the upstairs bath. My mom has all watercolor and such paintings framed on the wall that my brother and I did when we were in 1st and 2nd grade. The emerald color would look awesome! (and they could care less what I do ;)
Jeanna, that's perfect. Go for it!!!!
Hi! I've been following your incredible blogsite for awhile now, Tracy, and I've hung back from contributing my two cents worth until now. I'm SO excited today! I recently got a new computer and couldn't manage to install the Macromedia Flash Player on it, thus NO videos (OH, NO! No Tracy goodness!) could be played. Tra La! I fixed it today all by myself! The FIRST thing I did was watch your Summer Catalog Shoot! LOVE the video of your beautiful boys with you! They are the true highlight of that video. On this one, the Chinoiserie powder room, I ADORE the tiles and the tips about the wall embossing and lampshade decorating. Your byline should read "JUST DO IT!" If we all set aside the caution that hems our lives and JUST DO IT, magnificent freedom of expression can occur and become tangible! Thank you for the inspiration and motivation you foster, Tracy! It's a real gift that you share with each of us!
