My mama thoughts...

Happy Mother's Day to all of you! Moms, friends, grandmothers, godmothers, nannies, caregivers... ANY woman who gives of herself to others (as we all do)... should be celebrated!!! These are some of my mama thoughts... observations and joys......

So, you know me... I would love for you to add to this list... I must know what you have learned and love as well!

xoxo, Tracy

* that children bring the greatest perspective one could ask for

* that our SUV has more snacks smashed into the floor than most grocery stores have in their aisles

* that wine was cleverly invented by a mother... and I understand why, and I love her... that brilliant woman

* that being the adult means pig Latin is a good language to learn so you can still communicate incognito with your spouse

* that bouncy balls are evil

* that the word creative must have been invented by a parent

* that I would smell of peanut butter most mornings... and then be scraping the residue off of myself while chatting with someone

* that wet sloppy, drooly kisses right on the lips are most excellent from little children

* that a shaken soda really can hit 4 walls

* that enabling a child does not help them learn

* that I would discover the lioness within... (aka... the I would do anything for them feeling)

* that a full cart of produce tipped over at the grocery store is never a pretty mommy moment

* that questions from a child should often be answered with a question in return

* that family dinners are better than just about anything

* that the day you will never forget is the day they were born

* that projectile is a regular word in a parent's vocabulary

* that private is a non-word for mamas

* that the noise level in our home has nothing to do with what kind of stereo speakers we have

* that not everything in life should get a trophy

* that snuggling heals most

* that being an awesome communicator is more than essential with kids

* that listening is underrated and talking is overrated

* that clean house means it lasts for about 5 minutes

* that kids' art is cooler than any you can buy

* that I really have a loud voice too

* that humble takes on new meaning when you are a parent

* that the dollar store is the kid mecca (and kind of the mama mecca too)

* that socks don't get lost in the dryer, they actually end up scattered all over our house

* that proud has a new meaning when you become a parent

* that guilt is something we do to ourselves (no one is looking that closely)

* that poopie talk would be so commonplace in any home, or with other adults

* that laws should be passed against those little wires that hold new toys in their boxes!

* that playing outside costs no money but is truly invaluable

* that judging someone else's situation is pretty silly stuff in the scheme of life

* that children can still be well-rounded adults even if you never did finish (or start) their journal

* that napping is a fantasy

* that superman really can fly... through chandeliers

* that telling your child you love them and that you are proud of them every day would bring the easiest smile to you both (no matter their or your age!)

* that chicken poop looks a lot like an ice cream swirl to a toddler (yes, really)

* that everything tastes better at grandma's house (I guess I have always known this...)

* that any mama can get ready in about 5 minutes

* that I really am a referee in disguise

* that daddies who change diapers, cook dinner, and pick things up off the stairs on their way up... ROCK!!

* that crying happy tears is just a mama kind of thing

thank you for your list! I am a stay at home mama to 4 kids under 5 (I also have a set of twins who are in their terrible 3's now!!) and I would say that your list includes everything that I have learned in my daily life. From the second I wake up in the morning until I put my head on the pillow at about midnight every night, my day is absolute chaos. But, I wouldn't change a thing!

Happy Mothers Day! I love your site and your blog! Your style and eye for color is just incredible!
This is my first Mothers Day without my Mom (she passed away on April 19th from ovarian cancer) and must admit I am way down in the dumps. But it helps me remember what a wonderful Mom I had, to follow her examples to my two sons and to remind everyone to really honor their Moms while they still have a chance!
Have a great Mothers Day and keep up the fabulous-ness!
Kelly :-)

Happy Mother's Day to you Tracy... and all you other TP blogette's that are mothers. Though I am not a mother, I am the VERY PROUD aunt of two wonderful girls, this list seems to include it all.

I would add one thing... if you are a mother, when you wake up in the mornings and you know the day is filled with to-do's, messiness, whining, crying, poop, etc..., remember that God has given you one of the greatest blessings. He has ALLOWED you to be a mother. I hope one day to have this blessing myself, but for now, being an aunt ROCKS!

Tracy,
I reread your thoughts, and must say...you are one of the most optimistic persons I know. That kind of wisdom usually only comes from a good therapist, a 12 step program, and / or alot of life challenges. Go Girl!!

Oh yes, I can't wait to hear about IM and Jeanna's meeting!!!! And the store!!!!! Oh, I want to go. I can't imagine being under one roof filled with everything Tracy Porter.

I must tell you, I went to a client/friends house. She has been wanting us to help her decorate her Dining Room. She has been telling me about this bowl she got and that's her inspiration for the room. I walked in and screamed, "TRACY PORTER!!!!" She responded by, "YESSSSSSSSS!" I screamed," I LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!" She screamed back,"ME TOOOOOOOO!" We went on and on for almost an hour about TP stuff! Then we looked at her two children and they looked at us as if we were crazy! It was your the serving bowl from your Katsina Collection, which I dream about consistently:)

I hope the weekend was beautiful for all of you! NC had terrible storms but we still had fun. I wore my filigree locket and got soooooooo many compliments. I had recently purchased a very expensive piece from a jewelry store and my sister thought the locket was it. She could not believe it!!!!!
Did you girls see the pictures of Jenna Bush's wedding? Ahhhhh so beautiful!

I love your blog and your mom list. I especially agree with the wine invention. I am a mom of two and they both bring me different challenges everyday...I have one who was in a horrible car accident and now shes changed forever..I had to get to know and love the new person she became...my view of motherhood is so much different now..it is the hardest most challenging, creative job one can ever have the priveledge to do..so cherish every challenge and find something to laugh about everyday..

The little things that annoy you and drive you crazy just arn't important in the long run and soon become a distant memory you wish you could have back...Oh if only life was a do over!!!

So good to see how we all connect on these points, both the mama list and the balancing act....I find it's easier to speak to what really goes on in my home/world , as we all are basically going through life in a very similar way, sure we deal with things...this and that differently depending on the situation,...But surely your grocery cart has tipped over before..? right? Thank goodness I am beyond blushing...
Melissa, you are right on, indeed being grateful is the most important piece. It goes without saying that family is the piece in life that keeps me centered. With all the chaos.....I still know, how fortunate i am to have each of remarkable members of my family. I will miss the smelly wet, dirty balled up socks everywhere someday. I know I will. I cannot imagine our home filled with their voices and love...and all the goodness that they bring.
Kelly , I am so sorry to hear about your mothers passing, I hope you are doing ok.
and..."real diva designs" my heart goes out to you as well. I cannot imagine, but to me you sound so appreciative of what you have, you found that...it's really wonderful.
My brother and sister in law have a lovely daughter named Sydney. She was born with severe Cerebral palsy
the entire birth was tragic, truly heartbreaking to see what they did and still do go through. But Sydney is an angel, and everyday they know this. I have never heard them complain ....just instead speak to how lucky they are that she is in their lives. Talk about great strength...they inspire me everyday.Where they pull it from I don't know....we all find it somehow.... it is impressive as hell when you see that in someone!
thanks as always for your lovely thoughts...you guys rock!

Tracy, Real Diva Designs & others: most of us have been through some sort of hell on earth...and back. I know I have. I can also be thankful now, in hindsight. My trials made me stronger; made me the woman I am today AND got me on my knees. I know where my "wherewithal" comes from...and it's not within. I've got an exercise for everyone. Get a cup of coffee/tea, pen & paper. Take 30 min. to make a list of everything you wish had NOT happened to you in the past. Look it over. You will see how it is used in your life today ...for good. God uses it all for the good. It's awesome!

Love your comment, Virginia. I think true joy in life is felt after we have felt despair, and hardship. In reference to Tracy's list, "Cuddling heals most" is so true, and works like a miracle on my little kids ages, 6, 4 and 1. I also really enjoyed the humorous ones..."a shaken soda really can hit 4 walls." Of course it's never funny right when it's happening, but you have to have a sense of humor about it at some point. That is how I get through so much!

And I will keep thanking God for my blessings!

p.s.
Yes, Tracy....my hubby was with our 3 boys when the grocery cart was on its way to the car, hit the speed bump at a fast roll, and our groceries went all over the parking lot!! another time, the cart got away from them, hit a lady's car and she wasn't amused. then there was the time the boys were with me, (we always shared the joy) and a giant jar of spaghetti sauce got dropped and my flip flopped feet ended up covered with spaghetti sauce. Yep, grocery shopping with boys can be an adventure!!

The new store sounds wonderful! I am 16 hours away, maybe one day! The catalog and videos sure give me enough inspiration. Tracy this list is amazing, can relate too many. I also enjoyed very much your thoughts about finding balance. I lost my mom when I was 14, now a mother myself I wish I had her to ask many questions about finding balance and striving to be the perfect wife/mom/hostess, etc. I have realized this isn't realistic, and your wisdom has put me at ease. 2 children, 1 husband, 5 dogs, a cat, guinea pig, frogs and toads and one beautiful historic house are alot of work but only need to feel warm and loved. This is all that matters. Thank you Tracy!

So nice that Robyn, Tracy and her mom spent the day gardening! I just discovered different varieties of lilacs, which I ordered and they just arrived. One of the 3 has a bloom, the scent is sooo heavenly. I have been reading these blogs and couldn't wait to share with you!
Visit www.doclilac.com. I spoke with doc himself when I ordered, such a sweet man! I hope you enjoy this website as much as I did. Can't wait until next spring to see them all bloom together!

Anon, we would love to hear about your historic home. Beautiful I am sure!!! The coastal town I live in is very historic and takes pride in keeping the older homes restored. We have a huge Historic Society here. Most of the homes are privately owned and restored to the Society's specs. Tell us about your house and city.

Artist in n.c. Well I have the privilege of living in an old stone home built in 1770. It is a Boone home, a relative of Daniel Boone. The Daniel Boone homestead is about a mile away. I live in what is called the Oley Valley. It is very pretty here. I do love living in an old home, remodeling challenges and all! My grandfather in law restored it in the 40's so we have all the original wavy glass single pane windows, wood paneled walls, plaster walls, and original doors. Our front door is sooo heavy almost like a castle door! I really haven't had to do much, refinish floors, paint, decor etc. Although I am still far from complete. Bathrooms and kitchen are a major challenge, and anything electrical. My favorite part are the garden areas that I am rebuilding. We had to tear almost all the bushes out as they were blocking all the first floor windows. Beautiful boxwood, was sad but they were just tooo big. Our town as well takes great pride in the historic homes and have to abide by the historical society specs as well. We have many outbuildings as well, which is nice. It saddens me to see old buildings abandoned or torn down for development. I am very lucky to live on this property. We had our wedding ceremony here 10 years ago in June, it was so lovely. We are the 3rd generation to live here and hope this tradition passes on! xo amy
